Test Incubation: Due to hatch 12/19 (including eggtopsies **graphic pictures**)

Gimme some popcorn! :)

(I had an incubator like those for my first several hatches. I hope you aren't trusting the unit themselves, for temp and humidity. Independent calibrated thermometer and hygrometer is a huge recommendation!)
I need to get them. I keep forgetting. Any recommendations? Something good but inexpensive?

I hear that the reptile ones are supposed to be fairly accurate out of the box, less than 10 bucks each, I think. Walmart has some even cheaper. Just be sure and verify them for accuracy, whatever you get.

I think today is day 6. I candled them and most of them have veining. It is hard to tell in some of the eggs because at least one of the hens throws a thicker color layer than the others. I think I'll wait until day 10-14 to candle again before throwing out duds. the difference should be clear by then.

So, today is day 9. I candled the eggs just now.

In the top incubator, all 12 eggs have an embryo, I saw 9 of them move!

In the bottom incubator, 3 have no development at all (one has a blood ring), 5 have an embryo but I didn't see movement, and 4 have decernable wiggly babies. These eggs are older than the top eggs and the incubator is closer to the floor. If I wanted a true test of how the incubators functioned, I should have put half the newer eggs in the bottom and half the older eggs in the top.

Oh well, I can test that out later.

Yay, for wiggly babies!!!!

YAY!!!! Wiggly babies!!
The air blows light in the bator tonight
Not a pip yet to be seen
This waiting in desperation
Is gonna kill me, wait and see
The chicks aren't peeping yet, oh will they ever co-ome
Those eggs can't keep them in, heaven knows they'll try
Won't let me in, won't let me see
Let them in-cu-bate, just let them be!
The eggs conceal, don't let you kno-ow
Well now you know!!!!
Let 'em grow! Let 'em grow!
Till they pip in the great outside
Let 'em grow! Let 'em grow-ow
Just don't slam that bator door!
I do care when they're going to pip!
Let the wait rage on
More chickens never bothered me anyway.
(sung to the tune of Frozen's "let it go.")
I gotta admit, i'm pretty proud of myself right now.
