Texas A&M quail

Jstall gets to borrow a scale. But JJMR I am going to buy a scale just because of you (and my curiosity).

But I will not process my best breeder just to please you, yet. I did process her sister though, as few weeks ago.
They however were over the 6 week mark.

You are right a scale tells all.

THE ORIGINAL A&M DR THORNBERRY DEVELOPED AND SUPPLIED TO DIAMOND H RANCH WERE BROWN IN COLOR AND MARKETED UNDER THE NAME "TEXAS GOURMET QUAIL" FOR MEAT INDUSTRY. THE WHITE BIRDS WE KNOW AS A&M WERE A LATER DEVELOPMENT PREFORMED AT DIAMOND H RANCH BY EXTENSION SPECIALIST DR. LEE CARTWRIGHT BY CROSSING THE LARGER BROWN BIRDS BACK TO ENGLISH WHITES FOR ASTHETIC REASONS

JJ, that is where the eggs of my Whites came from, Diamond H Ranch. My brown birds came out of Louisiana. The Diamond H, I think is closed.

Those are lovely! I'm short on brown females, the few browns I have are mostly males. I envy you!

I can send you some Browns too

Yeah, that's gotta be a mis-print!! Either that, or he processed them at 8 weeks old..........

Yes I Gravely Disagree With His Bob Carcass Weights... Those Number Maybe True For Standard Or Wild Bobs, But Certainly Not For Many Strains Available... Ie Northern/wisconsin Jumbos, Georiga Giants, And Butler Giants. But This String Is About The "great White Quail"

Jstall If They Are From Diamond H I'd Venture To Say Thats About As Close To Ground Zero As You Can Get For A&m's. They Are Attractive Birds. I Hope They Continue To Do Well For You.

For Really Big Browns I Recommend The Xld-1 Line. Some Of Them Heifers Get Pretty Good Size For Coturnix. Most As Comparable To Large Whites, But They Do Seem To Be Much Slower Maturing Birds... Longer To Attain Full Size And Slower To Lay In Many Cases.... All The While When Compared To Bobs Any Coturnix Speces Is The Hare To The Toroise... It Ultimately Comes Down To Quantity Vs Quality. I Have And Love Both Speces, Dont Get Me Wrong, Coturnix Are About As Close To Instant Gratification As Anything That Comes In An Egg--- I Refer To Them As The "roaches Of The Quail World" Because Of Their Super Fast Incubation, Maturing, And Procreation Times, Not To Mention The Sheer Numbers They Can Produce. But Like A Few Others Around Here I Have To Rate Bobs At The Top Of The Taste List

Dr Thornberry sent his 'Texas Gourmet Quail" now known as the Jumbo Browns out to more places in Texas than the Diamond H. But that is one that made the news then because the birds made the Ranch.
The ones around here were better know or should I say came to be known as Bear Bayou Giant Browns and they had live weights of 14-18oz which would put them dressed around 11-13.5 Oz. I hear someone's working on them again. Takes years people.

Like I said JStall, you have some very well bred Whites, sort of like some others I saw last Spring, but a different White with different markings. But I bet the same pedigree.

I think if Texas A&M asked everyone that was raising their White strain of old from a 200 mile radius to send them a dozen eggs for a new study. They would be totally overwhelmed and buried in eggs. Yes indeed, little birds make for good BBQ the DR got them sent out all over the state. Had to have been good for grant funding. I have to agree, I like them BBQ'd and microwaved with fresh made Tomatillo Salsa. Now try a 6 week old or younger with that and feast your taste buds. Quite one of the best things I have ever tasted. And I have dined at Gourmet restaurants all around this country.

OK...now there is an 18 oz. live weight coturnix. (ANY COLOR)....Do I hear 19 oz. ?

This IMHO (BULL) is counter productive to the whole coturnix market! It's really nice to muse about the 16+oz coturnix, but doing so: with out delivering the goods, really hurts people that just sell coturnix!

That's all I'm saying, and of course....It's just my opinion.
