Below are Coturnix and BUTLER Bobwhites I have in the brooder right now. The Coturnix are light in color and hard to see, but they are at least 3 times the size of the Butler's. They hatched within minutes of each other. At the end of one week, the Coturnix are already 2x the size of Butlers or any other Bobs. In fact, at 3 weeks + 2days, this particular Coturnix is followed around the brooder because the Bobs think it is mom. In a few weeks the Cotunix will be almost full grown, while the Butlers will reach that size in 18-20 weeks. The Cotunix eat at least 3 x as much feed too. I time the hatches and brood them together for 4 weeks.

I have zeroed in on the "whites" as my favorite color of Coturnix Japonica. and like I said, I will be calling our covey, "whites". "jumbo whites" if and only if they consistently make weight.

and by the way, I am glad to see my favorite knowledge bank of posters already in on this over 18 months ago.

may have to add some more linked references to this thread, as it will be revisited, I am sure.

I am just trying to get my facts straight, I hear Texas A&M alot. and I am not saying people are wrong or right, I dont know where anyone, in alachua county or the USA, got their birds from.

I am going to do more research on the program itself, when it started/stopped, etc.

are original Texas A&M white or brown birds? I read that they were jumbo brown quail that the good dr. gave to the quail farm. and since have been bred to english white.

is it that, or do I have it half right?

now what the "texas quail farm" did to them afterwards, did they use that line of TAM browns bred back to english whites to produce their own white "Texas A&M" line? or did the good dr. develop brown and white birds on university soil?

I have more learnin' to do...please help fill in the huge gaping holes in the theory.

not trying to cause a ruckus, in the end, imho, they are white-colored coturnix, I don't care to use the adjective "jumbo" or not, we certainly aint gonna be breeding for small birds so should not have to differentiate,

and so, to me, "I" should just call the white quail in my brooders- "coturnix", color "white"- in its humblest form.

Yes, the Texas A and M quail was brown it seems and the program didn't work out or we would see the quail in our grocery stores. I continue calling the big whites Texas A and M/Jumbo Whites just because the names are interchangeable and I know my birds have the original strains in them (there are throwbacks in the color at times, my whites produce brown once in a blue moon). If you know your birds blood, past lines, then you have the right to call the bird the name it deserves.

I agree and I am onboard with this and thats what I want to be able to reproduce in my knowledge base should someone ask., and again, my aim is at a decently read history of the texas AM line or strain, if you will.

reason I ask, my father-in-law shot a video of me and asked me a bunch of questions and I don't really know the exact answer to them, and I didnt want to allow it to be viewed on youtube if I was not projecting an accurate image

now, when I get some more T AM Quail from you, Quaillady and because you know your birds, and I trust you., I would be able to tell the camera I did have T AM blood, if they asked...

the "other" white birds I currently have in my brooder from other local sources, may or not have that bloodline, imho, and so I should just call all the quail I currently have, white coturnix.

So I have a few questions on the A&Ms.

1) Stomberg's website says the Texas A&Ms (aka jumbo whites) has white meat. Read in this post stream that is not so. From those eating them what is the answer?

2) Is it true that the Jumbo White was delevoped by cross breeding Jumbo Browns with the English Whites for color and size?

Thanks.
