Blue
Scale Quail

The male and females are similar in appearance. Sexing can be accomplished when they reach 5 to 6 months old by comparing their throats. The female has gray lines under her chin, and the male is brown under his chin. They may lay more than 60 eggs in a season, with clutches containing over 20 eggs. It is very important to have unrelated stock to increase fertility among these quail, and the eggs require 23 days for incubation.

First off TBS quail are a very beautiful bird and also very flighty. If your looking at having a bird because you want it to be sociable and a pet, I would pick Coturnix quail. If your looking for eye candy these are very well suit for that. They need a lot of room and should be house in pairs, trios, or colonies. I would give 2-3sq/ft per bird...some would say 1 sq/ft but with flightier quail I think the more room the better. My question to you is why get them from a Hatchery? There are plenty of breeders around who offer 10 times the quality birds of a hatchery!

We have two indigenous species here, the Blue Scale and the Bobwhite. Even in the wild the Bobwhites are far hardier, we have a greater population of those than the Blue Scales.
