True dat but don't enter her into any beauty queen pageants! She'd walk out strutting her stuff in her umm er umm bikini and the judges would run!

Evening ya'll!

I did a little bit of work on my coop this weekend. I had to move the nest perches. I had them to close to the nests, making it hard for the chickens to get on. I noticed this a few weeks ago when one of the chicks would hope up there. I also put up a roost in the "open" end of the coop. I have it at 4 feet, hope that's not too high. I may have to lower it a bit.

@Ms Jellybean ~ Big improvement on your house! You've done tons of work since you bought it. I do like the color choices you are using. Look really good!

@A1momof3 ~ Welcome back! Hope you have a good time on your vacation. Where are ya'll going? I'm glad you don't have RA. There are a lot of different "arthritis" related disease. Hopefully your doc will find out what is going on so you can get some relief.

@Brookshire11 ~ Such a pretty hen! She misses her buddies and feels safer on you.

If they are able to see each other and don't seem to want to fight though the divider then you can always try it and see what happens. Mine seem to have worked it out when I mixed my 35 4 week old full size chickens with my 8 week old bantams. And they never seen each other until I put them together. The bantams did seem to stay at one end of the coop able the others stay at the other end. They did this for about the 1st week now they get along ok. At least when I am out there. I have not found any sign of fighting or pecking going on. I also mixed my 8 week old silkies with my new 3 week old Americana's. THe silkies seem to have decided that the Americana's are their new baby chicks and let them get under them to sleep. It's so funny to look at 10 3 week old chicks under 3 8 week old silkies. Not even sure that the silkies are hens or Roos yet. So if I was you I would let them in the same place for a few hours and watch them and see what happens. Start with just a few at a time.

My Silkie is pretty maternal too...and she's only 16 weeks. Making me a believer in their broody abilities.

Thanks LoveHen and ManyHens for your notes. Glad to see everyone made it here after huge storm crossing TX last week ... the storm killed 1/2 of my 2-3 mo chicks.

I saw this cafe shop. For me I had stayed away from beer, liquor since 15 yrs old. Last year I started to stay away from sodas and coffee too (now I am a good boy and a bit richer). So can I come into your cafe shop for... maybe the restroom ???

Here is Charlie at 2 mo. For the 2 mo anniversary, he took a day off and .. slept. He is now 2.5 mo, trying to roll over. His leg is huge as he is preparing for the upcoming World Cup.

He is just TOO cute!

I have a recipe to share (and it isn't for a sweet). I haven't made this yet but it sounds good.

@TexasLisa - How are you feeling? Did you get the ok to resume normal life from the doc?

Here are some shots from the garden. I am starting to freeze stuff and I have given away quite a bit too. I like to share with my neighbors.

This is what I picked the other night. I missed one day of picking beans. They are very prolific! I love my egg basket. It is perfect for the garden. Can't wait to use it for eggs too!

Zucchino Rampicante. It's a funny looking squash. Haven't eaten one yet. I also have yellow squash and 2 other kinds of zucchini and lemon squash, along with spaghetti squash.


My spaghetti squash. Taking over as usual, but at least this time it is using the handy panel and not taking over the garden. I can't wait for this fall so I can fix up the garden really nice. I'm going to get more of these handy panels to use.

I never ordered my egg basket..I may actually need one soon.

Goodwill has soooo many baskets for like...$1-$5.

Today litle Charlie went for TB vaccine. They weighed him and it was 12 lb 12 oz. He is just over 2.5 mo and was 7;01 at birth.

All my stuff (except the onions) are heirloom. I was told they wouldn't do well here. Right. Perhaps it is the soil. What did you do to prep your garden? I compost my leaves (mulched) in mine over the winter and I fertilize a few weeks before planting and then right after I plant. I may throw some out there again in a week or so to help the with the heat. My garden is raised and the people who built it added organic soil and manure (found the bags in the yard). I don't know when they set it up but I lived here almost 2 years now.

My sunflowers are in a bed that I didn't do anything special to. The giant sunflowers are doing better than the heirloom varieties, but I think something (birds) ate the seeds since they don't get planted very deep.

The soil here is pretty bad. Heavy black clay (gumbo) and very alkaline. Amendments are necessary.

I have mine in a raised bed now since it's so hard for me to do the bending while gardening. I put humus, bagged soil and organic mulch in my beds. I did not fill them up, since I plan on putting my deep litter there when I clean out my coop. I think I need to add more to the bed. I plan on putting another bed in front of my chicken run once we have it finished. I think it will get there, it will just take some time.

About 3 years ago when I planted my last garden, it went into the ground. We put it where the area around the barn where we kept the horses. It grew like crazy!! Tomatoes were taller than me, and we had so much squash, that I eventually just mowed it down since we were tired of eating squash. We even had some of the squash grow during the winter that year, lol.

I think it is a matter of preference. I like metal because it is easier to keep clean and it dries quickly.

FYI... There is a house on White, just west of College that has had fresh picked veggies in a box on their walk quite a bit lately. I think they are giving them away. Stop by on your way home from work today and see.

I remember your garden now. It could be they need more root space (depth wise). Does the garden get any shade at all? Mine is in the shade all morning until about 11am or so. I wish it got shade all afternoon. I bet it will do better next year. Mine is doing much better this year than last.

I've decided I need to reduce my flock. It's going to be a couple of months before we can get the exterior run built, and I feel that I have too many chicks in my coop. I will be putting the RIR's and the Comet's up for sale if anyone is interested. PM me and I'll give you all the info.







That would bring me down to 15, which would be more manageable with my current coop until we have the time to put up the run.
