Texas Member List - Updated 1/2010

I have a crazy question..... I recentaly bought some buff orphington , and what I thought to be ameraucana eggs. The buff eggs hatched out buffs, but the ameraucana eggs hatched out silkies:.. The eggs in question were light green, and big, like an ameraucana.. I bought some silkie eggs, and they were the size, and color I thought silkies should be.. Do you think that an ameraucana roostor could breed with a silkie or that a silkie rooster could breed with a ameraucana hen?? I swear on my life the eggs looked just like an ameraucana egg.... I am just wondering if I might have half breeds.

The resulting silkie chicks... 2 have the 5 toes, but 1 has 4. Could that be a sign that they could be half breeds? One of these chicks is what I believe will be a white, and it is fluffy, but the other 2, which are black, with grey on their bottoms, aren't fluffy at all....Any help here would be greatly appreciated..

I loved the story and picture.

Yes, they are crossbreeds. It would be a silkie rooster over an EE or Ameraucana hen since your eggs were green.

They should be fun to raise. I love funky chickens and their eggs will probably be green too.

ok, since they are "funky chickens" what size might they be? Will it still be ok to breed them with other silkies, or should I put them with my ameraucana's?

I'm sorry but this is so funny.. when I looked in my hatcher, I thought I had hatched out 2 lil black bizzards.... then I looked at their feet, and I couldn't believe they were silkies..... or half silkies

They will probably be on the small size, but may surprise you. If they lay green eggs, they are technically EasterEggers and could go with your Ameraucanas.

I was hatching some eggs earlier in the spring that I took from a black cochin hen but I wasn't sure of the rooster, when they hatched I was really shocked too. They were black as they couold be and then I saw their necks, they had no feathers. I had no idea and had not even considered they could be necked neckers. I was given a bunch of birds over the winter and some of them were mixed and there were a couple of necked neckers in the flock, but apparently this hen that from looking at her looks like a cochin has some necked necker in her. The two necked neckers I have in the flock lay green eggs because they were crossed with Americanas so I knew the green eggs would be necked neckers but I am now finding more and more of my brown eggs hatching out necked neckers. Every time I hatch a clutch I get more and more necked neckers and they all seem to be black.

I was told and have read somewhere that if you breed a necked necker hen or rooster with any other breed you will get necked necker chicks, but if she doesn't look like one and I don't have a necked necker rooster I don't now how I am getting so many necked necker chicks. Does anyone else have a clue?

Anyway, mut chicks are kind of fun and I love to see what comes out of every egg. Good luck with all your chicks and have fun. Bonny:D

All I can say is all three of my half breed silkies are healthy. Thet are very friendly, as most silkies are prone to be. I guess one could say they are taking their temperment after their father

.... Anyway thank you all for all the help.. Sadily my husbands says I must sell them next year.. He doesn't want any barnyard mutts:hit.... I do believe I will have to change his mind.. They are just too darn cute for me to give up;)

Hi Carla,
I just joined in May and I live in Mckinney, which is north of Dallas in Collin Co. Thanks for putting me on the list. And thanks for doing all this:weee

Welcome Debzie !

Very familiar with the DFW area. I was born and raised in Dallas, and moved to San Marcos when I retired. I don't miss the city at all.

(Will update the main Texas list on My Page soon.)
