I live in the Paradise, Wise county, and the snakes keep killing my chicks. I have killed 5 rat snakes in 2 weeks. Today one got in my outside chick run, and eat 3 of my chicks. One was a guinea, the only one I had

. I just wanted to send out a warning to all in the Wise county area... The snakes are back with a vergence

Hi everyone, I'm out here in Conroe (just north of Houston) and having trouble with the heat already. Any good suggestions for keeping the birds cool?

Also having trouble with some unknown preditor, haven't caught sight of them yet, does anyone know of a place you can rent or borrow live animal traps to catch things like 'coons and 'possoms?

Thanks for any help and good luck to all. Bonny

I read in the paper yesterday that the rattlesnakes are breeding now and there are more snake bite reports this year.

Maybe the rat/chicken snakes are doing the same thing.

Rat snakes are good to have around the coop to control mice and rats. However, you MUST protect your chicks. Chicken wire will not keep them out. Put your babies in a snake proof pen (1/2" hardware cloth, no holes in the ground or wooden parts of the pen).

It is always sad to lose any of your feathered friends...

I have misters and lots of shade to try to keep my birds cool. You can also add frozen water bottles (with the lid off) to their water bowls, turn on a sprinkler a couple of times a day, put shallow bowls of water out for them to stand in. Vitamins and electrolytes in the water also helps (think gator aid).

Some of the birds can't handle the heat as well as others so that may mean bringing them inside a bit to cool off.
