Texting & Driving

Our street was closed last friday for over 2 hours due to a head on collision. I did not witness the accident. People who did witness the accident cited a teenage girl on a cell phone.

This is becomming way too common.

Makes me miss the good old days when the worst thing you'd see the driver next to you doing was picking their nose.

*sigh* This is precisely why I would LOVE to have... ohhh say a '67 Charger... '69 Mustang...
Yeah, power *drools* but also these cars are built like freakin' tanks and won't crumple like a coke can when hit by a Hummer at 10mph.

I envy the gas mileage of the smart cars, but don't envy the funerals to come. And I've no doubt that they will with nuts like these on the road.

There is no call so important that you need to talk or text while driving. If anyone hits me as a result of phone use they better hope I can't walk.

I agree it is a risk just like driving while using drugs/alcohol.I have a relative that recently got a DUI.He just doesn't get why I am SO MAD that he put children like my own at risk.I guess SOME PEOPLE will never *get it* till they kill someone.

LOL on the nose picking. My dh sees a lot of stuff going on from his 18 wheeler as he passes cars.

You guys don't have to worry about me! I got rid of the cell phone and am very glad to have done so!

DH had a truck totaled a while back- he was hit by a 17 year old girl talking on her cell phone. When she got out of her SUV she was telling the person on the phone, OMG I can't believe I hit him!

Her daddy didn't have her SUV insured either, that's another story though.

My mother an sister both died from passenger compartment intrusion in a crash in 1990. I understand the "tanks are better" mindset. I had it for years. 13 years of cutting people out of cars changed my mind.

I love my classic cars but the fact is if you crash any car from from before 1980 head on in to any car after 1990 the passengers in the older car (on average) are more than twice as likely to die in the crash. Yes the car comes out better but the people do not.
There are (at least) 3 impacts in a car crash.
1 the cars hitting each other.
2 the bodys in the car hitting the inside of the car. (seat belts, dash, airbag steering wheel)
3 the internal organs hitting the now stopped external body
The third impact is what kills people. All of the energy in a crash in an old car is dissipated at the 3ed impact. A new car will decenegrate inside an out to dissipate as much energy in the first two impacts to make the 3ed less deadly.

Also the first generation mustang are debatable the most dangerous cars ever made. The fuel tank in these cars are in the trunk held down by not much more than there own weight. When hit from behind the tank ruptures an fuel is sent threw the back seat covering the passengers. When hit in the front the whole fuel tank is ejected threw the back seat, threw the passengers an out the windshield.

As for the video.... It is very realistic but for anyone not use to seeing this kind of thing would see it as over done. If I had made the video I would have toned it down just a little to help people believe it. This is also a British video so the actions after the crash are not the same as they would be in the US.

This is why we have a no cell phone rule while driving for all the drivers teenager or adult nothing is worth having an accident over thanks for the post to the video.

Yeah, I like to 'forget' those bits Boyd when I'm doing my hypothetical drooling, but I hear ya.
Every vehicle has it's ups and downs, and every wreck is different, SO many factors.
But yeah, I realize there's a reason those vehicles aren't easy to find.

Mattemma I know EXACTLY what you mean. My Uncle pulled a similar stunt. He had gotten a truck (wanna say 80s Chevy) and was fixing it up. He finally got the booger running, no muffler/tags/inspection, at about 3am after a long day and night of drinking (no wonder it too so long to find the problem right) so he and his buddy decided to 'test drive' her by going to Louisiana... they made it to Tyler before their weaving finally caught the eye of a cop. BOTH were trashed, but they arrested Uncle and let his buddy (also totally plastered mind you) drive the truck back to Arlington. Unc is STILL ranting about how they picked on him, didn't do anything wrong, etc. He was three times over the limit in a beyond illegal vehicle that could be heard miles before you saw it weaving across all the lanes (his own description of the event mind you)...

My mom is no better, she just hasn't gotten caught yet. I remember all too well watching her pour beer into her travel coffee mug before driving, during driving, didn't matter. Heck she had us do it for her sometimes... great example setting there

In any case, neither has ever shown any remorse for those actions because they just don't see anything wrong with it. Even after our cousin Robbie was run off the road and killed by a drunk... he and his girl... after he'd just graduated, had scholarships lined up... I had only met him a couple times and I was sick over it... Unc and Mom claim to be upset, but then they get right back behind the drunken wheel.

ANYWHO, point being that I hear you. I completely understand your dismay and disgust that people would do that and not give a fig about their life, or anyone elses.
