I am still upset about this so guess I will post..........
Today, one our young roo's came up on the front porch.yelling like crazy...I went to the door and he seemed frantic.
I looked down to the barn and my other three roo's were all but pushing the hens into the barn.............
Everyone was running.
The roos were behind the girls with thier wings out as though they were scooting them in.
My DH went to the barn and sure enough chased off a coyote.............
We did a head count and everyon was there.....the roo that came to the front door
has a huge bare patch where his feathers were pulled out..but no broken skin.
Hope his feathers will grow back.he is a 1/2 english Orp......

Interestingly, everyone stayed in the barn or just outside the barn the rest of the day.
I know that bugger will be back and I am going to worry myself sick.
We have 6' cyclone fencing around thier sleeping area that we lock up at night
so I know they will be OK except when out during the day.

I hate to put them in runs.but may have to..........

I love to hear a good roo story! Haven't had any useful roosters here at our place yet, but I'm still hoping.

I hope your chickens will continue to be safe. Give those roos a treat!

What good boys! They DO deserve an extra good treat for keeping their girls safe today. Any pictures of the heroes??

Scary!!! Definitely keep them protected... sucks though because that coyote will probably keep coming back. Your roosters done good!

The coops are in the barn.so double protection.
Yes I know they will be back.
They are so darned smart, it is hard to shoot them.
The minute they see us.they split...........
We have a lot of them not far and during the summer they seem to get plenty of mice and ground squirlles.
But not much out there right now......................

And yes.actually everybody got treats

I love the title of your thread. Last month I came home to see a hawk on top of one of my big Barred Rock hens eating it. Of course the hawk flew off when it saw me, there wasnt much left of my hen. I didnt have a rooster. The next day I got a one year old rooster from a BYC friend and "Sarge" has been a blessing. He is like a walking radar scope and is always looking for predators, or any other birds like turkey vultures, and he sounds the alarm...the hens run for cover. I've seen him corral them into the pen as well. He is truly a darn good rooster and I wont go without one again. I'm glad your hens are safe and sound with your roosters protecting them.
