My name is jonathan. I love in a suburb of New Orleans, La. My wife and I are completely new at having chickens. We stumbled across your site and instantly fell in love.

I found a coop plan from this site and decided to build it. Here's a pic.

It's ;x8. We have 4 chickens. The inside isnt done yet.

Nice to meet you Jonathan, Welcome to Backyard chickens.

the height isn't as important - the length and width are (floor space). chickens should have 4-5 sq feet per bird inside the coop, excluding nest boxes and roosts. In the outdoor run, they should have 10 sq.feet per bird. Chickens get very irritable if they are crowded and act out by bullying, fighting, feather plucking and at extremes cannibalism.

coops need to have sufficient ventilation as well, as a draft free coop.

If I have two windows to provide ventation how do I keep my birds "draft free"?

Hi Jonathan, welcome to BYC!

What breed of chickens did you get? Hope you're enjoying them...they can be so interesting and fun. If you haven't already, take a look at the Learning Center for some really good articles on all aspects of raising chickens.

Make yourself at home here and if you have questions, feel free to ask.

Nice to have you join us!
