So sorry for your losses.

We have a variety, Ameracona, Polish, Wyandotte, Black Jersey Giant, and a Broiler.
(Ameracona--- Cookie- huge rooster, No Name-hen, Tie-Die-hen-- Polish-Star-hen, ---Wyandotte- Cinnamon- hen -----]Jersey- Black Betty- Rooster (trying to re-home as he was sexed a hen) ------Broiler -Pretty, hen. Last winter was horrible here. Lowest temps in a century. -22 or below for over a month. Everything was starving. One coyote bled to death from injuries getting into the coop. They were desperate. We have set up some better security this year with warning system just incase but winter so far has been mild.

I am getting some new chicken in the spring and my daughter will be showing some of her chickens this year in 4H. Any suggestions? They must be "winter hardy" and lesser aggressive breeds. My daughter can pick up every chicken we have, even roosters, lay them on their back and cuddle them, kiss them on the head and basically anything else she wants to do with them, with out any fuss from them and she loves that.

My daughter has been hands on with them everyday since they were brought home. That is, I'm sure why they tolerate her the way they do. Lol More often then not they sleep in her arms. Her most loving are her Broiler-- Pretty, and her Ameracona Rooster--Cookie.

I would suggest going with one of the breeds that has a well deserved reputation for being friendly, calm, and gentle, such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Cochins, Sussex, or Brahamas. We have had all of these breeds over the years (along with dozens of other breeds), and my children made lap pets of these five breeds. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. :o)

Wanted to show off our biggest baby, our Ameracona Roo. He lays in my daughters lap and let's her cuddle him all she wants. Lol

First is Eden's Polish, Polly, last fall. She's very sweet !

And then a few more of our flock getting out for a bit on one of our first nice days of the new year!
