Hello, I only posted a few times, but have been reading and learning on this forum and I want to say thank you all!!!!
For the past 10 weeks I have been building a run and coop with my 3 teenagers. We are all new to the world of ducks.
We have 6 ducks and 1 goose.
With quarantine I made sure the kids got exercise with the hard work to appreciate it all.
We built a 55 x 25 run with posts and welded wire. The kids used a manual post hole digger 3 feet deep for I believe 35ish posts.
Wire is buried 18 inches underground.
On the outside we hooked up some electric strands to keep everything out. Over head we used neon yellow lines criss crossed to hopefully keep anything from flying in.
The coop is 4x8, with a easy clean out door and a front door for the ladies. Used some sliding bolts and locks on both. Air flow on top with 1/4 hardware cloth screwed in with washers.
Used blackjack 57 for the floor and about 2 feet up the walls.
Made some PVC pipe flow feeders.
Found some solar lights on Amazon that are dim, but get bright with motion. have those throughout the run and around the coop. I did test it out while locking myself in the coop and had the kids walks around setting off the motion. I couldn't see the brightness inside the coop so it was perfect.
I also added a 18 inch wide garden that runs the 55 feet. I have string blocking it until the lettuce grows into free food for them.
Right now they have a kiddie pool, but I am thinking what I can do for them there because it's too small.
The ducks turned 6 weeks on Monday and the goose 7 weeks so it was time for them to move into their own place.
We've been ready for them to move out on their own, but I was a little nervous leaving them outside overnight. This was all my kids idea, but apparently they all grew on me and are my babies too or I wouldn't have been so nervous.
Anyway, last night was their first night out in the coop overnight. I was excited this morning when I woke up to run out there and let them out and see how the did. They were nervous getting out of the coop, but I sat down in my chair with some coffee and waited about 5 minutes and mother goose brought the girls out. They ran by me straight to the pool and then off to eating grass and feed all happily quacking away!
So anyway ---- Thank you all for the posts I read and the replies to my worries!!! Great group of people sharing here for newbs like me.
