I helped my parents when I was a young child to care for our chickens. Unfortantly due to life I have not been involved with chickens for a very long time. For the past year I have read about raising and caring for chickens and 2 weeks ago I brought home 14 chicks. So far so good. They are very happy and growing fast in their brooder. I have bought several different kind of chicks and I am working on learning their type. And through some of my research over the last year I found this website. I am doing this now because I have returned to my childhoood home and I now running the farm. My grandchildren are very familiar with the cows, donkeys, dogs, and growing hay. But not only them but many children do not know anything about how there ancestors raised food and animals in order to provide for their family. I am hoping to introduce this concept to my grandchildren so they learn how to be self-sustaining adults later in life.
I also have a small herd of blank angus on my place. I have 2 type of native grass that grows each year to sustain the cattle. And I have it baled to help make it through the winter months. I also have a donkey that helps protect the cows and small calves. Some of my hobbies include crafts, quilting, I am getting back into gardening. But my favorite past time is fishing. I have manage to start the regrowing of peaches with 2 productive trees and will be adding more. I have 8 pecan trees that are productive every fall.
I have 4 grown children scattered across Texas and 3 grandchildren. I am single and soley responsible for my farm. My parents died 3 years ago, 2.5 months apart. They were married 67.5 years and my dad was 88 years old and my mother was 85 years old at their time of relocating to heaven. Growing up my parents always told my brother and I their blood, sweat, and tears on the land was to leave a legacy for their children, grandchildren, and family in the future. My brother sold his half in less than 24 hours after taking possesion and I committed myself to caring out the legacy my parents gave me with my inheritance. I am also a full time labor and delivery nurse. So needless to say I am very busy person. I have 4 dogs. 2 rescure dogs that help protect the place and cows from coyotes and wild hogs and other predators. And 2 small long hair chichuachuas that keep me grounded.
I believe you I have listened to me carry on long enough and will stop here. Thank you for reading my first post. And lets get back to caring for a flock. jkkirkland87

So glad you joined us at Backyard chickens. I thoroughly enjoyed your intro.I hope you will enjoy BYC as much as we do. If you put your state name in the search box, it should come up. You may even find there are other BYCers living in your area.
