Thank you so much for all of the replies. This seems like a really close knit group of folks who know A LOT about chickens. I really appreciate the info. We've named the 4 hens after flowers. I'm a florist, so it's fitting. Rose, Lily, Heather and Daisy. Daisy is the most docile of the group. Having a hard time with the name for the rooster.

A question
Should we be giving them eggshells as a supplement? And what kind of treats/snacks do they like besides apples?
They are 9 months old and this is their first laying season.
We got a specific for laying feed that is well balanced. Nothing special.

You can feed the shells back to the birds. It is best to bake them a bit to kill off any bacteria before you feed them. But you should always keep oystershell available to them at all times.

They usually like watermelon, grapes, boss (black oil sunflower seeds) popcorn, oatmeal, plain vanilla yoqurt, and shhhh (I'm whispering) cleaning off the carcass from chicken or turkey dinners.
