about nine years ago a student of mine gave me two chickens because I thought "it would be cool to have chickens". He was a sweet kid who wanted to please his teacher so he brought me two baby chicks, both Rhode Island Reds. I named one Mossy and the other Winston. Well, Mossy is long gone but Winston just passed away yesterday. She was sitting on the ground in the coop with labored breathing but upright. I sensed something was wrong a few days ago when she was a bit wobbly getting up but then she was hunting and pecking as usual with the other birds. I always marveled year after year how old she was getting but how good she still looked and kind of entertained her living forever. Well, yesterday I pet her a few times and thanked her for her friendship, went up to the house for a few minutes and came back and she was laying out, dead. I picked her up and buried her. I'm not saying I'm distraught or anything, but it's pretty interesting when an animal can come into your life like that and represent a whole chapter of it. I have two coops now, and many birds, all different types of chickens, and all the fun and joy they bring is amazing. Thinking about old Winston girl and the fact she was the start of it all is very heartwarming. Thanks for listening.

Wow, nine years old! It is obvious she had a good life with you to live that long. Winston did a very fine job of introducing you to the joys of chickens. RIP Winston.

I understand.
This exactly. She sounds like a wonderful girl.
