Thanks for the roost, but no thanks!

Soooo I've been pretending to be Bob Villa and I've been finishing the Fudgie Palace. Right now it houses 9 chicks, 4 are about 6 weeks old and 5 are 4 weeks. This evening I built them a nice roost that stair steps... when I installed the roost several of the older chicks jumped right up on it. Sat around for a while, had a great time. I thought "all right!" Whereupon, all chicks promptly jumped off the roost and bedded down on the floor.

I can't get any love for my handiness!

I also installed a pvc feeder. At least this was a big hit!

Tomorrow I need to redo and rehang the door. I'll take pics then too.

give the chicks some ,there still young, a 4 week old chick isn't very stable... did you ever watch them fall over just as there going to sleep? now imagine that up on the roost 2 foot off the floor

My Broodys take their 12chicks and roost 4 or 5 ft off the ground with no problems ever, and started doing it at 1wk and now 10 are 5wks and 2 are 4wks with as I said no problems.

i don't know why mine didn't catch on that qwick, that's why it was funny watching them fall over, lol, their 24 weeks now and would rather spend their time on the ground sleeping then the 4 different roost i built for them, even in the coop at night they still sleep on the floor, my roosts are all 2x4's with wide side up

I'm sure that they'll use it eventually. I was just suprised at how fast they tired of it. LOL! I thought they would play on it more. Kids!

They will probably appreciate it more with time. As mine got older they definitely showed a preference for being higher. My antisocial leghorn hen in particular keeps trying to roost up in my ladder!

Oh and I forgot to say, I'm not the carpentry type. I'm more the "eyeball it" and make it up as you go along type. This having to keep stuff all square... torture!

Crazy chicks had better start appreciating my hard work!
