Dear BYC community,
Just wanted to say THANKS for all the help and support I've received!! I have so many questions, as evidenced by my post count (over 100 in less than a month? I must be crazy!!) and the advice and guidance I've found has been wonderful.
Not to out myself as a total moron, but this is just HOW new I am to chickens:
Chick day! Yay! Awww, they're so CUTE! Wait...they're all identical. No really, are they clones or something? How am I supposed to tell them apart??
How come that one's not moving? Here, let me poke it a little. OMG - is it dead??? (poke, poke, poke...PEEP, PEEP). Oh, never mind. I guess it was just sleeping. But why was it lying face down the feeder?
EEWWW - that can't possibly be normal?! I thought bird poo was supposed to be white? What IS that stuff...?? Eewww - why's it on the other one's head? What did she do, ROLL in it?? (new chicken mommy later found helpful poo website with graphic pics... EEEWWWW!!!....)
OMG, Quick! Come look at this! (yelling for family). It's like they're in a trance or something. Why are they making that weird buzzing sound? Look, I'm clapping at them but they don't even blink!! I make that sound before I'm going to hurl, do you think that's it? Do chickens even throw up?? This can't possibly be normal... (chicken mommy hears purring for the first time...)
OMG, Quick!! One of them is on her side with her wings stuck out all over the place! I think she's DEAD! Look, the others have even BURIED her!! (chicken mommy sees dust bathing for the first time...)
New chicken mommy's "OMG" list goes on and on. Everyone has to start somewhere, I guess! Luckily the chickens seem to be extremely patient while I figure things out. Probably helps that I bribe them with fresh corn from the garden...
Thanks for all the help BYC community. Clearly I need it!
