Thanks

Have you processed any of your Bourbon Reds yet?

Well yesturday I went and helped my friend harvest 4 turkeys they were born in may so they were between 11 to 14lbs. She was very persistant that I took her 14lber home so the bottom photo is of my families thanksgiving turkey. Ours will brine tuesday thru thursday and a cider brine

They look great. What type of turkeys were they?

I think you did good. Just chalk this up to a learning experience. Be proud of what you did. Good job! :thumbsup

Do you think if you would have fed them a HIGH protein pellet, would have worked?

Thank you. One for the learning curve. I didn't know they had such a long mature rate also. They were 6 months old and were fed

Poulin Turkey Pellets for the majority then a mix with that and cracked corn and beer to finish. Their frames are a decent size, they just look too thin.  I'll try and post up a pic, and yes...we'll be eating all 3!

Can't wait to see pics. You all are getting me excited about my turkeys. I was thinking about processing for Thanksgiving but it's too late now, so now I will focus on Christmas Day.

A+ :thumbsup

Good job!!!!!!!!

ETA: I like the idea of tieing them up to that gate there. I was wondering how I would be able to handle my Bourbon Reds by myself. You have showed me how. It's so great that you all take pics and post them. You never know how your pics can help other people with ideas. Thanks for the pics.

I was hoping to process them for Thanksgiving but because I was lazy this weekend and processed a duck, I didn't do it. I will process for Christmas. That will give me a few more weeks to fatten them up. I will post pics of the process from beginning to end, including weights.

we tried to do them in a road cone..I know little red neck but that better for chickens they didn't fit FYI if you tie him to the fence make sure to have someone strong hold the wings when they do their last flap thing you don't want to bruse the meat against the fence. I just held the first few inches of the wings between the feathers and held them part way open.

Ok, I will do. Thanks for the tip. ;) :thumbsup

Hey, do you think I could wrap rope around the wings/body so that he doesn't flap his wings? There will be a time when I will have to process by myself, so I am looking for ways that I can do this alone.

kuntrygirl : try the bag! It really worked very well. If you don't have a bag, we had been considering duck tape to wrap around the wings and body because we thought it would hold better than string to keep them from flapping. Then I was just going to remove it before scalding, as it would not matter if it ripped out feathers after the deed.
