Stupid Snap freaked out because she was standing in the doorway staring out at the snow and I dared to go near her. She flew up into the tree tops. Now she's afraid to come down. 5 inches of snow on the ground, and a brisk wind. 14 degrees.

We went through this a year or two ago with her when she decided to take off for unknown reasons, and we finally found her hypothermic in a neighbor's yard. Oh, please, not again! YOu know the phrase "he hasnt got the brains God gave geese?" wellll...I think they should change it! Now I'm going to be worrying til she comes down, if that ever is.....

Can't blame a pea for having a pea brain ya know but sence you know this already happened i would say you got a peabrain as well

She will come down when she gets good and hungry

No actually I didn't even get that close to her! She just freaks out when the land changes color, lol.

She's down, but when I came home a few minutes ago she was wandering around in our front yard. I think she's afraid to go back in the barn...she can't see her friends, and they can't see her. I'm worried about her. I guess I will go back down there with some treats in a few minutes, the flock will get noisier when they see me coming with food, and hopefully she'll get the idea and won't fly the coop again like she did last itme. .

I had to go back out to make sure she was ok, so I went out with treats. She was back in the barn, snuggled in straw. Looking relieved.
She got two treats just for her.

( I only called her an idiot out of concern for her...though I do think chickens are smarter, lol.

Glad she is safe -- for both of you!

Not sure if we can directly compare pea brains and chicken brains for IQ points... different motivations, different temperaments. Chickens seem like they are pretty interested in... chicken business. Mine stay pretty focused on chicken stuff. Peas just seem like they are so much more curious about the rest of the world, and more aware of everybody else's business... If my peas think there's something wrong, they honk like crazy. The chickens may not even notice anything's going on. My biggest male pea has been mourning the fact that I moved HIS chickens to another pen, the chickens are like, "so what." So I dunno, seems like apples and oranges to me

That's true. It isn't really possible to compare accurately. I love them all, anyway.

I had to laugh last weekend it was nice out, we were target practicing on our gun range, we arent' out there shooting a whole lot, so it's a novelty. Sweetpea and Snap came walking quietly up from the barn and found an out of the way place to watch...with lots of interest, lol. So, yeah, they are really curious. The chickens were just happy someone was outside..they seem to know they have extra protection from any predators that might be around, when we are out there.

Peas are much smarter than my chickens ,guineas ,geese ,or ducks .
I have to say the guineas seem to have the least amount of brains with a touch of ADHD to go with it

When I put down fresh hay or straw in the peas shelter, they all freak out and don't want to step on it. Then finally one of them walks across it and they realize it is safe. When I recently re-seeded the pen for ryegrass, all of the peas were walking around eating the grass seed that I was throwing out, and Peep was in the shelter afraid to come out because he was scared of all the little seeds covering the pen. I made him leave the shelter to show him it wasn't bad and how everyone else was enjoying the seeds, but he ran and flew up onto a perch so I left him alone. Sometimes they are very weary about the ground.

My peas are little archeologists. One year Damsel found a pair of keys in the pen and picked them up and jangled them, then dropped them. Turns out it was a very old pair of keys that someone had lost a while back. They have also dug up other random objects from dust bathing. Where their pen is there used to be an old house that burned down, so they are always uncovering fragments of colorful glass, metal buttons, etc. Their latest find that I found at one of their dig sites, AKA dust bath areas, was a small glass bottle. We figure it was used as a little medicine bottle.

Unfortunately this is the case. Adult peafowl are very sensitive about the ground. Every time when I made the floor in the barn new with straw it starts again. Some are not coming down from the perch for days. I could observe that young birds don’t take care about it. But as soon as they are older than one year it starts.
Greens are even more sensitive compared to IB or any mutation out of it. When I had the imported birds here I left them on the floor for 2 or 3 weeks without any perch in the barn. Just to make them familiar with the ground. In Thailand they were never in a closed barn and with straw on the floor. Otherwise some of them wound never go down and starve on the perch.

Yeah. That's been our experience too. and go figure...they don't have snow in India lol...that I know of, anyway.
