In the Brooder
Hi all!
Thought it was time to stop being a complete lurker and make an account. My wife and I pretty much grew up suburban to slightly urban until buying our first house about a year and a half ago. We're suburb-ish at this point I suppose, and have a 3 acre (extremely narrow) lot. I don't expect that we'll ever be truly self sufficient here, but we've been wanting to move in that direction where we can. Our first year was a lot of clean up of our back yard space, an initial try at a garden, and daydreaming of some back yard helpers (or troublemakers as the case may be).
Now that we're heading into our second full summer here, we've decided to go for it with a few chickens. We've ordered 4 chicks (guessing that will expand, but wanted to start small) due to arrive in May.
As for experience, I'd say we're starting out pretty much from scratch. I don't think my wife has had much if any experience with birds of any kind. My closest experience was hand feeding and socializing pet birds (small parrots, etc) when working at a pet store in my college years, so maybe a few tiny bits of that will be relevant, but again, I'm considering us as complete newcomers. Other than that, the occasional ushering of our neighbor's chickens back to their own yard is the extent of it.
Happy to be here, and already thankful for all of the information I've been able to learn from posts here. Looking forward to the adventure!
