That wonderful feeling when you find that first egg after molt!

This year, everyone hit a hard molt, and then the long nights of winter. I checked the nest boxes more out of habit, than expectation. But that wonderful feeling when you find an egg in there. I really did not expect any eggs until February.

I’ve had one out of 15 that has laid just about every day this winter. One of the Red Rangers we didn’t get processed a year ago.

Congrats!! Our older ones have been molting, so I’m excited to finally start to get eggs from them again too, whenever that occurs. It is their second winter and first really big molt (although some seemed to have a definite molt last Jan at age 11 months). I hear their eggs get bigger as they get older, so it will be interesting to see how much the egg size changes.

I'm still waiting for a first egg from this season's molt.
I have a 16 months old Barred Rock that finished molt about 10 days ago.
Past experience with my 44 months old Golden Comets says I need to wait another 3 weeks.
I have 4 in molt out of 6 layers.
Last week I only got 7 eggs. GC

I'm envious. All of my hens molted fairly late this year, and the nest boxes have been sitting empty all month. I've having to buy eggs again. The horror!
