This is Jailbird, a Black Star and Silkie mix. Despite being part Silkie the only traits she has from her Pops is her head poof and a single feather on her leg. But, oh boy, she did not skimp on the Silkie attitude!

She's almost 7 months old and has been acting broody lately. I looked high and low for her stash and finally found it...

In an old feeder

Inside were 18 eggs, not a single one belonging to her. All Bantam eggs

Certainly a new hiding spot!

Last night when putting up one of my other broodies she had an extra chick under her...that was 3 weeks younger than her other chicks.

It only occurred to me to check Jailbird this morning, and lo and behold she had hatched a whole gaggle of chicks in her bucket. Apparently she had either been sitting on the eggs a lot longer than I thought or stole them from someone else who had. Luckily she did accept the new nesting location now that it had a brood of peeping chicks in it

In this picture she has about 14 Bantam chicks under her (+ 1 egg left)

Ahhhh! They’re cute!

Do you know what the babies are mixed with are are they pure? They’re so cute!
They were all Silkie eggs, so some Silkie hybrids and maybe some pure Silkies. At a glance this morning I noticed a few Easter Egger/Silkie mixes. A lot of black ones.

I'm on my way back from work, I'm going to set them up in a rabbit hutch with their broody once I have some lunch. I'll see if I can get a pic of the whole clutch without Jailbird giving me a couple more bruises lol
