because until it has "run its course" it will continue to rip through the vulnerable population.

those being the elderly, immunocompromised, obese, and unvaccinated.

And, along the way, it will continue to mutate. Delta version, then some other one, and some other one .... Requiring more science and more vaccines and more risky interventions because science has to try to keep up.
