My husband and I had Covid-19 in December. We did all we could to stay safe, but still got infected. My case was moderate, his was more serious. Fortunately, we both recovered.

I have no doubt this is a pandemic. It's been 100 years since the last one, so no one alive today has any personal memory of what it's like. And we're in a time when many people can't agree on facts, nor can they trust authority. I don't agree with those who don't believe this is a pandemic, but I understand the skepticism.

I, too, had concerns about the speed if vaccine development. Lucky for me, my best friend is a scientist working in biomedicine. She explained mRNA vaccines to me and how they differ from traditional vaccines. While the Covid vaccine was developed much faster than we expected, mRNA technology has been studied for years by companies like Moderna. We are lucky that this research had been done and made it possible to ramp up quickly.

I am also concerned about long-term side effects. We simply don't know--and cannot know--long-term effects until we get to the long-term! No way around that one. But my scientist friend knows that vaccine side effects show up in the first few months, at least up until now. Everyone has to evaluate this risk vs. getting Covid-19 and possibly infecting others. I accept the risk of the vaccine.

Scolding, shaming, and berating people who don't agree with you may make you feel better (or superior) for a moment. It's not how you get others to understand you point of view.

For what it's worth, I don't think this is the last pandemic I'll experience in my lifetime.

Be well, my fellow BYC peeps.
