Thanks. I try to make the EHAL every year. The LF are usually fertile by now, but this year I'm only hatching bantams, which have a narrower laying season.

I didn't know that about bantams. Is that because they're smaller and/or do they typically lay less than standards?

To some extent. Also, I don't exactly live in a warm climate, and cold is harder on them due to their small body size.

My rooster is young as well. The feisty bantam hens take a while to recognize roosters as higher in the pecking order.

My roo is young too, about 8 months. Only 1 of the eggs I set from my own flock were fertile. He's still working on the rest of the girls and hasn't quite perfected his technique yet.

I finally got a response to my message to Brinsea's support email yesterday. No troubleshooting steps or anything, just telling me to call their office for help.

I would have just done that had I known I would wait for 8 days on a response only to get that. I guess I know better for next time. I just figured it would be easier to describe what was going on in text. (Plus, I'm not the greatest speaker, so... )

Thankfully, my Ovation has been working fine since @jolenesdad posted the instructions to factory reset it! :celebrate So, at least I wasn't having to manually turn those eggs this whole time.

Hi all. So I candled the eggs my broody is sitting on. She was none too happy about that. Lol. Anyway there wre two clears and one I pulled because it had a crack on the end where the air cell was. Would have attempted to repair but was seemed clear and smelled a little off. I put it into a ziplock bag and opened. Very weird. It was solidish inside. Like a half boiled yolk but kinda milky white. No veins or blood ring. I’m guessing it was bad? Strange that my first bad egg happened under a broody.

A couple more were questionable but giving them a few more days to be sure. Felt like an incomplete candling because the broody kept getting in the way. Will enlist help and try again tonight.

Good job on opening the egg!
