I saw a chart once that showed the drop off of fertility with roosters. Fertility dropped quickly some where between 2 and 3 years of age.

Interesting, this seems to be the case with hens as well. Any theories as to why? I imagine it could be based on numbers vs life expectancy in the wild.

I think you are correct! Chickens live a short life which would effect fertility

11 Banty eggs now in lockdown! Did one last candle and saw great movement in most of them and the others are still looking great as well. Getting pretty full in those shells. Lol

I'll be setting up my brooder later today in case I get any early hatchers. Didn't see any internal pips yet so I don't think anyone will be coming early but you never know. I'm so eggcited!! :wee

Every animal is more fertile when young and decreases with age, right? I imagine like you said, that’s how species survive and grow and thrive. Growing, birthing, and raising babies is taxing on the body....and best reserved for the young folk. I’m learning this at 37 with a 2 year old. :lau

Are people with chicken eggs set on the 30th locking down tonight, tomorrow daytime, tomorrow night or Thursday morning? I’m a little confused on which day is which.

I’ve got 41 eggs left and I’m a little nervous to candle and mark egg cells and get the turners out and lock down all st once. I was going to mark cells tonight and lockdown tomorrow night.

lockdown on the day it works best for you. For chickens, day 18 or 19 is good

Oh yes! There is definitely a reason we have kids when we are young!
