The 10th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!!

Did the Day 7 candling last night for the eggs I set on the 25th. Pulled 2 obvious clears and left a few I wasn't sure about. Could be early quitters. Had some veins, but not as prominently as some of the other eggs. Will candle again on day 10 to double check.

Two questions:
Is it possible for different breeds to develop faster than others?
- and -
I have some really dark brown and green eggs that it's super hard to see into. Can I leave them until hatch time just in case or will they go bad? Other than weighing them is there another way to verify if they are developing?

(ok that was 3 questions -lol)

Bantams could develop a little faster. But the egg color shouldn't matter for standard sized chickens.

You can leave them in. Just check them regularly for seeping and sniff test. They also get pretty loose and liquidy looking upon candling (not all the time).

As for checking development look into getting a brighter flashlight with fresh batteries. That makes all the difference in the world.

Yes, some breeds develop a bit faster.

Often the opacity of the eggs will make them seem to develop slower though

As I mentioned I’m going to move my least damaged air cell eggs from a carton to a turner tonight and leave the worst a few more days. I’ll may hand turn them forever after checking on day 7.

Should I weigh any (of the non-damaged eggs) tonight to adjust my humidity or wait until day 7?

I like to weigh eggs just because it gives me an additional parameter to track. When I'm unsure about something...air cell size, development, etc I can go back the the weights to see if everything seems on track. Good luck! Hope your hatch turns out well.

Thanks @UThobbyfarmer and @ronott1

They are all large breeds. I asked for an "assortment" from the local breeder I got the eggs from. Have some light blue eggs, some olive green eggs and some dark Maran eggs...so there are a bunch I can't see that clearly into. Will watch for spoilage and leave them be till after the hatch.
With very dark and sometimes green eggs, look for increasing darkness in the egg. If you see them continue to glow, then they are likely not developing

One egg is so dark it's like candling a rock. Can't see anything other than the air cell. For the others I saw some faint veins and blob-ish areas. Time will tell if the blob-ish-ness grows. Some definitely seemed to glow a bit so I'll monitor that too. Thanks!

1st problem temp dropped to 95 over night, not sure how long it was that low. 2nd problem my dog hit the plugin today when I was gone and temp dropped down to 90.
it's like when the broody gets off the eggs for an hour when it's 40 f out... should be find
