Yeah. I've never done one before. I was actually surprised at how SIMPLE it was, and how little they asked.
As many commerials I hear about it, you would think it was rocket science or somethin hard to do.

I read this thread and remembered that my census came today.
I went and opened it and found there were only asking the names, birthdates and races of everyone in the house and whether they lived here full time or were in college housing.
The only other thing was whether I owned or rented my house.
I filled it out and it literally took me 5 or 6 minutes to fill it out for 8 people.
I don't know what the other one is but this was not invasive at all.
I thought I got a census years ago that was more detailed.
This one is not any different than the one I fill out every year for my town.

That's how mine was. Nothin to it.
It takes me longer to rattle off the number of breeds of birds that I have....

I'm with Royd on this one, they probably can key up a satellite dish and look down on me from above anyway. I KNOW I'm not tellin them anything that they don't already know/can find out. The first few years I balked at direct deposit for my taxes, then I realized that the Feds can access your bank account anyways so who cares?

Then again, I also agree with Livinzoo
I don't fill it out because I believe it is a waste of our money. All the info they need is on our taxes. Take it from there and save some of our money. Besides if you aren't paying taxes than you shouldn't be counted anyway.

I DO wonder why they can't just use the tax form info. Anybody who is anybody is going to be counted, because I KNOW everyone claims every kid/elderly person/live-in and maybe even as many pets as possible to get those tax credits

People who don't pay their taxes can just uh, ......*insert choice phrase here*

Here they did the hiring/training for it last summer. Alotta college students applied for it (they took applications and used the gym for testing). I sent alotta interns to test for it.

The reason they don't use the info from the IRS is that the census was written into the constitution to be done every 10 years. Every man, woman and child is counted. Blame George Washington.

If you don't answer you'll get pulled for an audit, and they'll send someone to your house for an accurate count.

Note:

There are fines for non-response and for false response as well, though the amount has risen from the 1790's $20. Today failure to respond can result in a $100 fine; providing false answers is a more severe offense, and carries a $500 fine.

Maybe I'm just reading between the lines, but I was surprised at how focused the Census was on being Hispanic and what kind of Hispanic you are.... Several questions on that and just one if you're "Other." Kind of like tracking immigrants or something.

Makes you go "Hmmmmm...."

But, yes, w-a-a-a-a-y better and shorter than the one that came out years earlier that got into details like "How many toilets in your household?" Who cares? The Toilet Coalition? This year's Census is pretty innocuous.

Think about it.

The census is for where you actually live. The information is not on your taxes. You can support someone that doesn't live with you. I will give you the benefit of the doubt when you say
because I KNOW everyone claims every kid/elderly person/live-in and maybe even as many pets as possible to get those tax credits

Just because someone doesn't pay taxes doesn't mean they shouldn't be counted. Maybe their income is low or tax exempt.

Waste of money by not filling out your form? If that's what you think. Much of the money is already spent and is already allocated. Do your duty as a citizen.

"hispanic" means of spanish/portiguese decent. So anything from familes in CA before 1847 (when CA was part of mexico), to parts of florida and lousiana & texas where spain had colonies, to more recient immigrants. It's not a race/color so they have to ask seperatly.

I filled mine out, working within the local gov't, I see why the census is important when it comes to tax dollars. I completed mine to the fullest...its not like I'm running from someone or something

I'm wondering if we all got the same census. Mine was very short. I live alone, so I only had to fill out the first page. However, last year, I had a multi-page pre-census monster arrive. It was ugly, with all those questions about what time I leave for work and such.

At any rate, this current one didn't seem to invasive. I already filled it out and sealed it.

eta - Now that I read all the posts, I'm guessing there are two types, the short one, where everything is mandatory, and the long one, where only the questions that are also on the short form are mandatory. Of course, that's just my guess.
