"hispanic" means of spanish/portiguese decent. So anything from familes in CA before 1847 (when CA was part of mexico), to parts of florida and lousiana & texas where spain had colonies, to more recient immigrants. It's not a race/color so they have to ask seperatly.

I heard they added more catagories for race this year. It's a way to track diversity- nothing to be offended by.

Why is important to know ethnicity?

As far as I am concerned, that is racist!

I filled mine out and sent it in, but for the race questions... I put other at the bottom and wrote in HUMAN!

I am a member of the human race!

I agree totally and Gumpsgirl, if you look around our county here we still have potholes from the year 2000. LOL. Seriously, I don't think I will fill it out this time due to the lack of support for the homeschoolers and the lack of public works around the area here. I heard that the state couldn't afford to spread sand/salt during this last snow we had but yet they are hiring private companies to come in and spot pave our roads and do tree service? whats up with that?

Off my soap box now

They probably want to know race to get an idea of the areas diversity. I grew up in a diverse area and even though genetically we are all human, often race is correlated with a way of living/culture. Often but not always because you can be an asian born and raised as an austrailain, or an eastern european born and raised as an indian, but in general, most people of a certain race share a common culture which can help determine the priorities and programs that may be allocated funds in a particular city. If you had x to spend on helping different cultures to meld, it may be more useful to spread that among communities where there is a diversity and people to meld vs one which is more monoculture or as often the case, of a similar race because they are so closely related. Guess as a reference, I'm as american as anyone else who's great grand parents immigrated in the late 1800's, but I'm 100% Chinese with some of the cultural expectations and way of life dragging on.

I guess it's easy to say race isn't important, but when you walk into the insurance office and the first question is "are you looking for internal student insurance".... makes you wonder.

Well, I must admit I am disappointed in many of the replies this thread. As it has been stated, it has been going on since the start of this great country and is the duty of every American.

Do I think the race questions need to be removed? Heck Ya! This is America. The great melting pot!!

I am not native to this land. (nor was the Indians running the casino down the road, they took it over from someone else too) But I was born here, am proud of being here, and will fight to have my say in my area's political business.

You must fill it out if you want a say. Just like voting. If you don't speak up, you will be left behind.

(and like others have said, they already know most everything about you anyway by now)

ETA: I do have a huge problem with illegal aliens having a say though. A door to door count would be fairer IMHO.
