The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

I'll be setting mixed breeds- my roosters are a white Cochin, Wheaton-y EE, and tomorrow I'm picking up a Japanese banty. My hens are 4 Cochins, 2 EE, 1 NN, 1 leghorn-EE (from last years Easter hatch!) cross, a silkie, two bantam Cochin-marans crosses, and two Japanese hens.

A friend might also be giving me some Cochin and Wyandotte eggs from her flock!

I have one of the hova-batons with the fan and the turner that holds 42 eggs, plus I expect multiple broodies this year. The NN and the silkie were prolific last year, and with four giant Cochins that I got a month ago, we can cover a lot of eggs to make up for the fifty-one birds lost in 2012. I'm so eggcited!

Ok, as promised here are some pics of my birds that I plan to hatch eggs from for this hatch. My offer stands for anyone short on eggs and doesn't mind Jersey giants and Jersey x's. I am offering free hatching eggs to the first 4 or 5 people who reply by PM to me. All I am asking for them is to pay for the shipping. I think it is about $15 for the medium Priority mailing box which I will send them in with tracking. They will be as fresh as can possibly be. I have Americana, RIR, Barred Rock, White Jersey giant, and one Black Jersey Giant (Hens). One Black Jersey Giant and three White Jersey Giant Roos.

I'm new to this whole "hatch-along" thing... Do we just set eggs at the same time? Sounds fun! I've never hatched eggs before... Should I give it a try?

Yes you should join. You will have fun, meet new people, and there prizes.

You can do it Jim. Now we can win prizes. Join in all the fun. You know you want too. ;)

A fellow Lapeer person!!! HI THERE! I'm your neighbor :) If you need anything just let me know :) I have two incubators and am planning on setting them both for the hatch-a-long. One doesn't have an auto turner so that is new for me. Hope it goes well

Oh dear, I REALLY want to join you all, since I JUST got a used Little Giant incubator with an egg turner And the fan kit yesterday, and I CAN'T WAIT to try it out, but I am afraid Easter is just a week too early. See, we ordered some different chicks from McMurray with some friends for the 2nd week of April, and one of the friends also wanted me to hatch out some Delawares and some Ameraucanas, since we have them, BUT she preferred that the chicks be about the same age as the ones from McMurray so there wouldn't be a problem keeping them together. I figured one week difference wouldn't be too bad, but I am not sure about two weeks difference in age. So I was planning on setting the eggs about a week after you all are starting this hatch-along.

Oh well, I will hang out anyway, if that is ok, and maybe I can join for real next time!

OK, see post above. I just hate it when I do that!!!! Hit Reply instead of Quote. SORRY!

Thanks, LoveMyChicklets! I am so ITCHING to start hatching chicks NOW, but we have limited space on our little farm and each order or hatch must have a definite purpose(and space to go). So I am doomed to wait until April for new fluffy chicks...

Oh well, I will just try to enjoy our adult chickens until then, and get very familiar with my incubator in preparation. If you hear of any Lavender Orpingtons within reasonable driving distance, please let me know! I really would like to get some for our laying flock this year as we are transitioning to an almost all Orpington flock.
