Morning everyone

Here are pics of my new chicks that just hatched

6 more go into lockdown on Sunday

And I started collecting my eggs for the hatch along 2 days ago. Im only collecting the Japanese Bantam eggs right now, I only have1 hen so 1 egg a day roughly so hopefully I end up with 10 of her eggs to set. I will start collecting my LF eggs on Sat.

I have yet another couple questions for you all on here.
1) How do you guys determine hatch rate? I personally judge it by counting all the eggs that start to develop (including blood rings) and then by how many make it all the way through and actually hatch. I have seen a post where that person only counts which ones made it to lockdown. This doesn't seem right to me.
2) How do you guys determine fertility? I count everything set in the bator and at first candling I check any clears for fertility. then go from there.

I was thinking about this last night and thought I would post that last year for the hatch a long, rate was figured as #eggs hatched / # eggs set.

For a large group like this and so that # can be Proven that's how it was done. Not sure how they are going to do best and worst hatch this year.

Akkkk! I love hawks and wouldn't try to hurt one, but I panic when I see them scoping the coop. I've witnessed several near misses and am sure I lost some. I hope my dog will grow up to protect the flock from them as well as the fox. At least we don't have trees to provide cover for them near the coop. This video was pretty neat. My cats all freaked out when the poor hen started her "chicken down" distress call.

Woot, almost time to start collecting eggs for set day.

Found the first pullet egg yesterday from my young Iowa Blue quad at POL, so maybe I'll have some eggs from the new group to incubate as well!

No Muscovy for this round, but here's one from last round! DS2 loves his duckies.

And for fun, caption this!

OMG that is too cute for words! He is such a character!

Received the March/April Annual Poultry issue of Hobby Farms magazine yesterday. I always enjoy the magazine but this one is special

Hurley did a great job on the article for the Iowa Blues! They used most of what she wrote, though the proposed Standard they listed has changed a little since then.
