Anyone else using pallets and scrap lumber to build their coops? My husband got a bunch of pallet tops (the ones with the solid wood board) from his job and they look to be the perfect thing to build a low cost coop. We are also using pallets to make paddocks for our pigs. 

oh yea! My brother just got done building a new coop out of all pallet boards. Best way to get them apart is a saws- all cut the nails in between the boards. That way you do not bust any boards trying to separate them. Cut the nails that hold the board together in between the joints. I took an old wooden cedar playground and made a coupe out of it. Works great. We are all for upcycling

Awww man........more than 40 pages behind. I hope I haven't missed too much that's interesting, but judging by the recent pictures, I'm missed some fun

Still holding out hope that at least one of my Icelandic eggs will hatch. I'll feel bad if none of the eggs hatch after my broody's been so diligent about sitting on them. I want chicks, but only Icelandic chicks..........

Here is the cheap candler that I made similiar to what my dad made 50+ years ago.
The red lid is a coffee-mate lid as it fits tighter. I cut the hole out smaller than I want and then wet an eating egg to flare it larger. When the hole is too large, just cut cardboard to fit over it. Last pic it is ready for storage. We candled 5 eggs twice and are doing all 46 tonight.

I can hatch WAAAAYYYY too many with a coolerbator ( called Henny Penny) as an incubator and an LG as a hatcher, I'm liminting myself this year.

90% of my building stuff is recycling scrap lumber. Biggest expense is screws and hardware. Finding good outdoor worthy hardware is difficult-- most rusts quickly, or comes unglued. Yes, unglued. Didn't even know it was glued: slide bolt and knob were actually TWO parts glued together.

You can make A frame, semi- A frame, colonial types. Lots of options for designs. Some people cut apart the pallets. I look for solid pallets and collect matching sizes in piles because matching = easier!! lol

This might sound like a stupid question but is today day 7 or is tomorrow? If you count the day that we set the eggs, then today would be day 7 but if you don't, then today is only day 6.

THis is why I always set close to midnight-- I get confused easily!! lol

If I set a midnight, then the first day is 1. ANd not zero. Love the hatch a thons!!
