Quote: You're absolutely correct - Needlessly aggressive roosters have got to go. But in this case, looks like this rooster was just doing his duty protecting his flock from the little human that was making threatening martial arts moves in his general direction. Sorry your grandkids had a bad experience.![]()
I forgot I had an egg in my pocket, and smashed it. To make it worse, I also had my camera in that pocket.
Luckily it was just one egg, and a small bantam egg even. But is still seems like a lot of egg goo came out of it when I was cleaning up the mess. I've got to stop using my pockets to collect eggs in. It seems like I do this at least every few months. Time to find a cute basket for collecting eggs, that I will probably forget to bring with me to the coop most of the time.![]()

This happened last year. I bought enough strawberries to use the basket since I didn't and still haven't made enough hatching cages. I went to throw something away and found smashed basket. Everyone thought I was crazy trying to pull them out and reshape them. They were too smashed. Ya know, I'm constantly picking things left around and throwing them in the trash, but if it's something I need, it goes right in.If you set eggs on the 9th, Tomorrow is Lockdown!Since I cheated and set a day early, I'll be locking down today. My kids think I was a nice mommy buying them a big carton of strawberries at the store yesterday. They don't know I wanted the container to hatch in.![]()
Now I gotta empty it out.![]()

I have 3 breeds in my 'bator right now, but just 1-3 of each. I have lemon cuckoo orpingtons, Swedish hens, and coronation Sussex. This is my first experience with any of these breeds and all were from a shipped source. Once they begin hatching, should I easily be able to tell the difference between the breeds or should I somehow separate them at lock down tomorrow??
I have my FIRST CHICK!!!
I got home from work and seen a silkie had pipped and heard a loud chirping and looked in the very corner and there was a HRIR egg rocking and a large pip at the top of the egg, I seen him trying his best to get out. With in just a minute of that time he zipped and is one loud chick! lol hes already played football with half of the eggs in the bator and when I talk he will chirp even louder. I have a few pics, you can see him looking straight up at me.
Everything seems to look good with him, he didn't come out soaking wet, yolk fully absorbed and seems very strong. I hope I'm just as lucky with the rest.
I do have a question though, the silkie egg that pipped, has pipped right straight dead in the middle of the egg. NO movement or noise which I know probably resting, but should I be concerned with where the chick has pipped?
Not certain. I think the SFH would stand out. Do you need to be able to tell them apart at hatch? You'll certainly be able to tell them apart once they feather.I have 3 breeds in my 'bator right now, but just 1-3 of each. I have lemon cuckoo orpingtons, Swedish hens, and coronation Sussex. You're not alone. It just happened to me the other day, but it was my phone in my pocket(well I guess that's a camera too). I was really glad it wasn't the turkey egg.

Glad I'm not alone, lol. I guess it's one of the hazards of having chickens. My goats always seem to know when I have an egg in my pocket and choose that moment to jump on me...
