The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

All 18 eggs are in lockdown and look good. I did break the 19th one a week ago adjusting the bator:(. I think there are two chicken eggs under my Muscovies. I havnt candled those. The Muscovies hens, two of them are sitting on 18 eggs, due to hatch April 13 by my estimation.

Dilemma ... Seems all chicks that hatched with help or not are now doing fine except the one little chickie that shuffles around on his/her belly....last night I thought it wouldn't make it through the night, but after nursing it all night, it's perked up a ton. It has lots of energy, but can't stand up or walk around. It flaps its wings and helicopters its legs to flop around. It LOVES me, and looks up and cheeps for me when I come in and snuggles me when I pick it up to give it water or food. Help me get it to start standing up... I've got it with little feet splint things I fashioned out of cardboard and duct tape and tissue, and it is propped up in a teacup, but that doesn't seem to be working.... I love this little one, and it has the most beautiful personality.....

Are it's legs out to the sides - spraddle leg?

Quote: It is interesting to read different information regarding hatching. I have read clinical studies that said the temperature at the end of hatch can go down with each day, ending at 95 degrees at hatch. One study had them hatching better at 97.5. There was a post yesterday that said hatcheries have to cool down large hatches or they would get too hot from the heat they generate.

The home stead chart that I use says to hatch at a degree lower than incubating. I have been hatching at 98.5 lately and they have had no intestinal problems.

I reduce a degree as well, its meant to more extremes, I just didn't want new hatchers to think 95 or 103 are ok to hatch with, sometimes people take things exactly as read if ya know what I mean?
Would I personally hatch above 100 NO would I let it go below 98 NO. But I wouldn't panic if it went to 102 for an hour I would have a few short words and adjust accordingly.

I will add this abstract was to see how the newly hatched chicks developed, this is important, not just getting a good hatch rate, its having the healthiest chicks we can!

Yes Sally, extreme temps and you could have deaths. I've been hatching long enough, that I don't stress over it anymore. I know my bator and what works best for me with hatching. Everyone learns and finds what works for them. Mother Nature is not as fragile as we think.

We are all just trying to help those new to hatching. I remember my first hatch and I was a nervous wreck. I sat on the hardwood for 4 days staring into my bator.

Okay, Everyone:

Press your ear up against your incubator and tap on a window...

Is there any cheeping??

I like to tap to encourage them. They love to hear it, like it's Momma's beak tapping to encourage them!

Quick runthrough, as I've just worked 26 out of the last 48 hours and now I have to run out to the farm...

I do love this, but the eggs should be upright, with the fat end up. Gravity dictates the air cell will go to the top with every bump and jarring motion the whole trip, and that will trash the air cells...

Please let them know they can come here for help and we'll all pitch in to do anything we can, should you need it!!

I need some help deciding on turkey

We will process 3 a year, SOOOOO do I buy all toms or both? can toms grow out together? how long until I can process a turkey? like a broad breasted?

You're on the wrong thread...you need to bust a move over to the Cinco de Mayo thread...and I have your address, still. Look for turkey eggs next week.

Head to a pet store and get some baby parrot formula. Mix it with water and feed by squirting it on the crack of the beak. Once it tastes it, it will chow down, and the probiotics and dense nutritional value will help a lot.

I recommend that everyone have this on hand for weak chicks, sick or injured adults, etc.

Quote: Wish I knew who it was, I need turkey eggs and am afraid they will be like yours.

Head over to the Cinco de Mayo thread and someone will set you up with great eggs there!

I say baby parrot formula, parakeet grit (a dish for them at 2 days old, helps prevent mucky bum), and a small log and a spade of grass (sod, w/ roots) out of the yard. I'm not kidding! They jump up on the log and pick various organics from the bark, and the sod also helps to put beneficial flora and fauna in their gut. Some might fear this would bring on coccidiosis, but I've experienced just the opposite.

Well, first EE chick has made his/her entrance...many more peeping....
This is day 20 but, in the past they usually start early. Temp is always
just at 100 degree but, this has been normal to start early so I don't mess
with the gauge setting...Have 40 out of 42 in lockdown....2 where for sure spoiled
...can't see through thick dark shells so I give all a chance.
Some eggs may have gotten chilled in later Feb. so I don't expect a high
average of hatching..
Started 9 am March 7 ...good luck to other early setters!!!!!
