I fear there is probably nothing to do for him. Some chicks just don't thrive. Sorry.

Thank, but I definitely won't give up on any life worth saving, He is doing better now that I stimulate and got some electrolytes in him. I don't have my hopes up he will make it though, but won't stop me from trying to fight for him.

Here is a great link on fixing SPRADDLE LEG
Done the bandaid thing.. hoping time will help it learn to stand I guess... according to this anyway. I found another one that talked about giving it chick physical therapy, but the little buggar refuses to try to stand up.

Look up wryneck or stargazing. Usually a few drops PolyViSol WITHOUT iron is treatment. Here is a good writeup on it. WRYNECK
Had one like this. That did fix it.. give it a little sugar water until you can get out to get some... :)

I have a few questions pertaining to my new chicks...

When can I take them outside? At what temp is it OK to take them outside for a short outting? I'm not talking hours maybe even just 20-30minutes? I don't want to take them out to soon or in to cold of weather. It may reach 70 with in the week and wondering at around a week old if I could take them out.

Also, for those that have some feathers glued a little bit together (you can see how they look in the pics i posted a few minutes ago in the thread) can I just dampen a paper towel with warm water and help that, or is this something that will go away on its own with a day or two? Most of them are doing great and noticing those spots are fluffing up nicely, some look like I went in there with some elmers glue and slicked their head feathers back lol so leave it or help it?

One more question, One of my chicks can't open his/her eye, It doesn't appear to be anything wrong other than just looks a little glued together. Should I dampen a paper towel with warm water and wipe gently? or?
I had 6 hatch monday last night they stayed in the Barn with Heat lamp. It was 32 here last night the Chicks are Fine this morning and looking good. I always keep warm water in there for them and there eating Chick starter already :)

Quote: Congratulations on the beautiful babies!

One mistake people make with chicks is taking them outside too soon. Their little immune systems are not ready for it. If they were hatched under a broody they would be used to the bugs out there but we do all we can to keep them sterile. For now leave them in the brooder but bring the outside to them! get a piece of sod with grass and roots and put it into the brooder with them to help get their immune systems going.

Wait another three weeks and then take them out briefly on a day over 65 degrees and low wind. Watch them and get them back in if they seem chilled.

Have a great time with them!

Baby is OK so far...I went back in to check a few minutes later and can't even find which one he is! lol But, I will continuously check.

I really believe he was already kind of weak, kept resting directly under the lamp and completely dehydrated himself...Or at least that is what I hope. Anyway, all is ok thus far.
Thanks for the quick replies!

Thanks, Once all are hatched and fluffed up in the brooder in a few days I will grab a piece of sod and put it in with them.
So waiting 3-4 weeks is probably the best recommendation?

Quote: I would wait. I have seen cute pictures of little chicks out on a pile of freshly dug dirt or etc. and then several days later, Help my chicks are sick! What happened!

The two things often go together.

They will love the sod!

This is one of the Bates line RIR's from Ron Fogel:

I gave it some sav-a-chik electrolytes I mix just a little into the chicks water and was able to get some for this chick and he is doing MUCH better, actually the last little while that I have went in and checked every few minutes and as of yet can't even find which one he is out of all of them. so I hope it was just a dehydration thing.
