Ok.......So I have to say that that project turned out to be a lot harder than I thought! I Can't tell you how many ways I searched that! I did eventually find it though. But before I announce the 13 breeds he published in 1863, I find that the most fascinating thing I found out today was that Google has a whole library of books you can search! Its like living with a library. Needless to say, I actually had to read a lot of Darwins book on the Origin of Species.........Dull even for a farm girl wantabee like me.

Now for what you all have been waiting for. Those breeds listed are.....

Game
Malay
Cochin or Shagai
Dorking
Spanish
Hamburgh
Crested or Polish
Bantam
Rumpless
Creeper or Jumper
Frizzled or Caffre
Silk
Sooty

Here is the link to where I finally found this info...

The Seabright is mentioned but from what I can gather he didn't consider it a breed because at the time breeding one seabright to another seabright gave you a completely different offspring.

Well folks, things have changed at our house. My oldest daughter (26) has moved back home and has to move her stuff into the room that I normally use for incubating and brooding, so I'm not going to be able to participate in this hatch. Best of luck and good hatching vibes to everyone!!
Totally understandable!! Enjoy the time together--

YOu can still come visit!!

Did some Google magic:

Creeper was a short legged chicken http://www.poultrypages.com/scots-dumpy.html

Xingwen Sooty was a Chinese meat breed which I'm thinking was related to the silkie because it's described as such:
Medicine-meat breed, mainly black
plumage pitch-black comb, face, skin
and tongue, black muscle, bone and
viscera

GOOD GOING!!!!! The 'creep and crawls' have very very short legs . . . .. . explains the name.

Hi Michele. Guess what. I switched the thermostat in my incubator yesterday and started it back up. I also have eggs in lock down. I was testing eggs from my Speckled Sussex pen. Its a good thing because the rooster decided to die last week for lack of anything better to do. These temp changes have really messed with the birds. I lost my 5 year old Blue Cochin rooster too. Then, ... a gander keeps getting in with the ducks and killing the drakes. I lost over 10 drakes to that darn gander.
Glad you have some of the Speckled Sussex eggs in the incubator as a small consolation for your roo loss. I'm hoping the weather starts stabalizing a little. The temp. swings have been a little crazy!
