Morning Peeps!

I have a question (or three.) I have recently acquired a second bator that I intend to use as a hatcher. My thought was that I can keep the cooker-bator cleaner and have plenty fo time to sterilize the hatcher between batches. I have never had a separate hatcher so I am testing new water here.

Tell me your thoughts on hatching on their sides vs in a carton, humidity levels you use for hatching only, what you line your hatcher with (if anything) and any other tips and tricks you use to have a successful hatch!
I'm interested in hatching on the sides vs in the carton as well. I only have the one bator for now and I really would like to keep this one as clean as possible so I was planning to purchase a couple soft cartons for them to hatch in, but have just been paying with the idea reading around on the forum.

Just got shipping confirmation, Barred Cochin's are on the way!!

they can get here somehow by tomorrow! We're getting 6+ inches of snow Wed. starting at 5 a.m. and I don't see how I'm gonna get to the post office?? Barnevelders are getting shipped tomorrow from Va. so a good chance they'll get to the p.o. Wed.

Congrats! The waiting is killing me as well and I feel your worry. We have snow coming to "NE Ky" and I am a little worried about how cold the eggs are going to get and getting to the post office. Even though the PO is a short drive and I only have one turn to make from my home it's just a very hilly and windy road you don't want to have to travel in snow. I'm not sure we are looking at as much as 6+ inches though. Good Luck! :)

I hatched in little baskets with paper towels in the bottom. :) That way they can lay on their sides which makes it easier to hatch, and my bator stays clean. :) The baskets also help keep the chicks separate. :)

The hatcher I built is melamine lined (whiteboard), its easy to wipe with sani-cloths. they are hospital grade we use to clean operating room stuff. (you are not sterilizing the bator, you are sanitizing it.

i put down that rubber coated mesh kitchen drawer liner and place eggs on side, its more natural.

I'm a numbers person and given enough data can actually get very close. In an old life I handled forecasting calls at a call center. LOVED IT!! Guess it's a matter of pride with me to predict a number with good accuracy.
