From this site... http://www.employees.csbsju.edu/ssaupe/biol327/Lab/maple/maple-sap.htm

"Why maple?
Spring sap production is a relatively rare phenomenon, and occurs in the maples (genus Acer) and just a few others. So, what it is about maple? According to Dr. Mel Tyree (2001) the distribution of sap and gas in maple stems is the critical factor. Species like sugar maple and butternut (Juglans cinerea) that have air-filled fiber cells and water-filled vessels will exude sap. In contrast, species that do not exude sap, such as willow (Salix), aspen (Populus), elm (Ulmus), ash (Fraxinus) and oak (Quercus), have gas-filled vessels and water-filled fibers.

So, it is likely that you have a maple if it is running a lot of sap right now.

I would just do a search on backyard maple syrup production. There are a lot of great sites out there that are very helpful! Here is a good one to get you started - Backyard Maple Syrup Production
Thanks for your help! It seems to be running alot, we collected half a gallon from one tap in only 5.5 hours yesterday. But again I dont know how to Identify trees so im not positive its a maple. Since this isnt hatch along talk I will search for some maple tapping threads on BYC. Thanks for everyones responses.

Thank you very much for the offer Sally! I did manage to get it eventually. I ended up rebooting my computer, tried again, and it finally worked.

Hoping to have a few more to set and photograph today. Maybe full incubators will help stabilize the temps! I'm hoping anyway.. Come on Post office..

Good morning everyone!

Good morning everybody! Busy day yesterday! Hubby built me a poop board for the coop. Yay! Now it'll stay a lot cleaner in there!
I've got a situation here with my still air LG. Every time I tilt it, the temp & humidity drops. Waz up with that? Really annoying, I'm considering putting the auto turner back in. I do not open lid.

Congrats JofulPromise!!!!

LOVE baby goat pics!!! Too cute! More pics please!

Those learning about maple syrup production - finished product will not necessarily be thick. The Aunt Jemima & others have additives in them to make them thick at room temperature. Pure maple syrup will thicken a bit naturally, after it has been refrigerated. Lots of resources on the web. Good luck!

Best of luck to everyone on their hatches!

Good Mornimg, Peeps!! I have two chicks out and bunches more in the hatcher from the last batch, come on chickies! Its raining here, got a sick boy staying home from school, and payroll to do at work. I may come home at lunch and get my brooder set up....... sounds like the plan!

I hope everyone has a great day and happy hatching!

Setting today, can't wait! I'm going to leave it till the last minute tonight to be sure none hatch while I'm away. I'm not setting any bantams, so I should be safe. Is it ok if I take the photo in the morning? I don't tend to come on the computer in the evening.

I set my two potentially-broody hens in the garage yesterday, with a blow heater (2000W - it's going to cost me a fortune). Still no sign of broodiness this morning

It was a bit of a close call, because temps dropped to -10C over night. Brrrr no chance of them going broody in that weather!

Dodgy connection? Maybe the heat element gets disconnected when you tilt it. If you don't want to use the auto-turner, how about egg cartons and tilt those? A stone or bottle cap under one side would do the trick.

I set yesterday around 1:30. Here are the Easter hatch eggsters:

ETA: looks like 36 in there. Also: pay no attention to the humidity level. It be broken. ; )
There you are.....

Yup--- well worth it for a dark marans!! I wouldn;t have passed it up either. Everything is mud here. I've been shoveling up the mud . . . and someone puts it back the next day.

Need every egg you can get!!! I have a blue copper that just went to live with the BLue Ameaucana rooster-- should make nice OE's !! Need to set up my second pen of FBCM--never enough eggs from those girls. I sell out of chicks so fast I rarely get to keep more than 1-2 for myself. Crazy!!.. PRetty eggs are worth having though.
I have Black Copper Marans and a Silver Ameraucana Roo. I hatched 1 egg from them, and the chick came out blue and pea combed (pretty sure it's a she). OE, right? Is there a chance she'll just lay brown or blue eggs?
morning!! is it day 7 yet?? ....... wanna candle...... wanna candle........!

I know, It's killing me....
