The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

I started 42 eggs in a hivabator and 17 eggs under two broodies at 12:45 on Saturday. We'll see who has the better hatch rate. The incubator is all b/b/s Amercaunas. One broody has light olive eggs, the other has dark olive and BFCMarens. I can't really take a picture - I don't want to take the cover off, and the broodies won't move without biting. But, they're there.

well my turner broke on me yesterday and dumped all of my eggs, so I went out and bought a new Turner only 1 egg cracked, hopefully these babies will still survive!

Here is my pic of what I set. Set in the evening of 3/9/13. I wasn't home at noon EST.
1 mille fleur cochin, 1 lav orp and 5 bantam langshan eggs.

OMGoodness! That happens? I just bought mine Saturday, and never even plugged it in yet. Eggs are sitting still right now because of detached air cells. In 2 days I planned on plugging in the turner, anything I should know??? And my temps are exactly 102 at the top of the eggs, I am so panicked that if it goes up one degree it's gonna cook 'em. I've always laid them on their sides and run at a lower temp. so I had the luxury of slight fluctuations. I am a nervous wreck over it! AND is the temp. gonna go up once once I do turn it on? Anyone with knowledge feel free to answer....

Seems like I am a day late for this but I set 41 eggs today. I have a mix of LF bbs Orps, EEs and EE over BCM. This is my first ever attempt at hatching.

If you don't mind I will follow along since I should just be a day later on my hatch if I have any to hatch that is.
You're fine. I gave a window of 2 days on either side of the hatch for people that couldn't set on time.
Okay, finally got set tonight - 30 eggs. Ignore the mud, we've had some rain here and I'm test hatching some new pens that insist on laying in the run, instead of the nice cozy nest box

Only 30?

What has the world come to when I have more eggs in my bator than you do?

I set 41 eggs. Four duck eggs on the 2nd and 37 chicken eggs on the 9th.

CRAP!!! Just figured out I've set all of our eggs so far at least a full day late

I have everything set for an EASTER DAY hatch. OOPS!!! Oh well, guess I better set the quail the same way. So far, I have set 5 duck, 6 bob white/tennessee red quail & 6 chicken. BigPoppy has set 4 Duck, 6 bob white/tennessee red quail & 6 chicken. We still have Coturnix quail to set. Won't have a count on those until we actually set since we are still collecting.
You're fine. No worries.
Quote: You can count whatever was set as long as it hatches between March 28th and April 1st. A 2 day window on either side of the scheduled hatch of 3/30.
Setting today, can't wait! I'm going to leave it till the last minute tonight to be sure none hatch while I'm away. I'm not setting any bantams, so I should be safe. Is it ok if I take the photo in the morning? I don't tend to come on the computer in the evening.

I set my two potentially-broody hens in the garage yesterday, with a blow heater (2000W - it's going to cost me a fortune). Still no sign of broodiness this morning

It was a bit of a close call, because temps dropped to -10C over night. Brrrr no chance of them going broody in that weather!
A picture in the morning will be fine.

I'm assuming this is for chickens. I have Coturnix to set yet as well & those don't get set until the 12th. And people with buttons set even later.
Yes, that date range is for chicken eggs. You can count whatever was set as long as it hatches between March 28th and April 1st. A 2 day window on either side of the scheduled hatch of 3/30.
Walked by my incubator and it occurred to me - how the heck do I candle 200 quail eggs?

They'll probably be fine. Seal the crack with wax.

Today is set day for Seramas. Tomorrow is the start of setting for quail.

We want to hatch on March 30th, (the day BEFORE Easter Sunday)

button quail: 16 days to hatch; set March 14th
coturnix quail: 18 days to hatch; set March 12th
seramas: 19 days to hatch; set March 11th

You don't. You randomly candle 10-15 a few times to check development & put everything not cracked or leaking into lockdown. Anything that doesn't hatch within 24-48 hours after the majority have hatched gets candled before tossing.
