in theory they are the same breed of chicken but are sexlinks so males look different than the females. oh an another hint- definitely a rare breed
Nice little set up you have
Wow, I was wondering. Watching these incubate has been an eye opener to the care and hatch process. I'm exhausted.I'm sorry, I meant to capture the quote on the question about the broody sitting on the hatching egg. They kind of fluff out their wings and hover over the eggs when they are hatching (like a tent). Although accidents can happen. I just had a silkie hatch out three chicks. Another hen piled into the nest with her and crushed one of the chicks. It was literally mothered to death. The actual mother has now been moved to a pen with the two surviving chicks.
Aww..good job baby chickies...now your mom won't be so worried.Update: Yes, we have chicks!![]()
3 hatched so far. Hoping the other 32 make it as well. Had a little trouble with the first one, initially who was ripping and zipping like crazy. She ended up on her head and started back around and stopped. Finally, she stomped and kicked her way off of her head and made it out.![]()
Meanwhile, 2 others, pipped, ripped and popped right out not wasting a minute of time. Then flopping around and crawling on everything making quite a mess!![]()
Had a bit to do today, company, phone calls re: chicks and friends over to help hubby put up a swing/jamboree frame. Of course, had to cook them supper. Just finished!
I'm including pictures of the 3 of them. The 2nd and 3rd chicks are dry and fluffed while the 1st but last is still a bit wet/drying in the picture. Thanks so much for the info and support!!!![]()
Looks like it will be a long night and week/weekend for alot of us. Good luck to us all!!![]()
