So, I'm 1/2 into lockdown as of today.

Because my EE's seem to already be getting crowded in their small apartments... (hardly any space left), I decided to lock them down today (day 17), rather than tomorrow. I took them out of their stand up cups, candled them, marked the aircells once last time and laid them on their sides in the best position for hatching. I'm hoping it will give the squished kiddos another day to get into position... & hopefully they do it sooner rather than later. I hope they don't get so cramped in there that they can't move.

I haven't increased the humidity yet, I would like give the barred rock eggs more time to increase their air sack size better. So, I haven't put the barred rock eggs into lockdown yet. I'll continue to hand turn those ones (spin at an angle now? lol) for the next day with them standing up in their little cups. Tomorrow I'll candle them all 1 last time, mark their air cells, and then lay them down in the incubator, and add more water. The one BR egg that I checked this morning looked right on schedule. The BR eggs are bigger and the chicks look like they will have just the right amount of space/development by Saturday.

I REALLY want the EEs to hatch! Well, I want the BR eggs too... but I REALLY want the EEs.

(HELP) Im at Day 17 and still in the tunner and I have had 6 hatch whats going on? I have looked at the other eggs no piping yet. Is this Normal or not? What do I do stop turnning them and go in to lock down? Someone please Help I have rare eggs I don't want to lose any. Thanks for any help!
what breed eggs? higher temps will push hatch a lot sooner like this, also serama and some bantam eggs will hatch early. I would def calibrate thermometers again before you hatch again.

LOCKdown immediately for sure. what was the humidity running before lockdown?

Losing a chick tonight. It can't stand up.. It spent almost 24 hrs in the egg after pipping. Something seems to be wrong with its leg on one side, because it keeps falling over and lying on the same side. I'm sad.

Still no pip with the Silkie or Araucana (sp?). One of the Wyandotte pipped, and I'm pretty sure the other has internally pipped. Today is day 24.... How long is too long to wait to help those that haven't internally pipped? I can't find a beak on either of them, so I'm not even sure where to start if I did help... I can see the beak (I think) on the other....
I just spent almost a week in rehab with "bubba" black cochin who turns out to be a girl too, if you remember I posted here when we first started, I cant tell her from the rest now!
Blarney showed me a great way to give therapy to a chick, if you have a tea cup that slowly tapers in the bottom you can put her in it to force her legs underneath her, just don't over or under heat her.

I will post the pics when I find them.... for now here are some links that helped me too, they are always found in the article https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101

CHICKEN ORTHOPEDICS ~

I love them! I just want to hug them!
Lol, I think it's all the hoodie's fault. If their pockets weren't always right there for the eggs this wouldn't happen. I think I need a set of baskets, one by the door, one in the coop, etc.
lol. I totally agree! Many baskets and totally the hoodies fault.

Gotta love surprises like those hidden broodies!
Eggs in pockets getting smashed. Oh yeah, been there! I had my teen son help collect eggs one day (just this once) & wouldn't you know it? It broke in the pocket that also held his cell phone! Totally ruined the phone. Ugh!
Loved the angora goat babies!
And the emu farm, wow! Big egg! Great pics!
I've been so busy with the maple sap running these last few days & my 9 week old chicks. I did my candling today & had to toss another quitter. That leaves me with 12 out of 20 for lockdown tomorrow. 5 Cuckoo Marans, 5 CM X SG Dorkings & 2 CM X Red Sex Links. I can hardly wait!!!
So jealous!!!! Born and raised in Maine, we collected sap in the early mornings before the bus. One year my Dad peeled the wallpaper off in my mother's kitchen trying to boil down the sap.

You crack me up! Love it!

BLARNEY! crud I cant find her image of the chick in the teacup! I don't have a tea cup so I rigged this cup and ductaped it to the bottom so he couldn't roll it over and trap under, I suggest drilling some air holes in case it would happen if you go this route. teacup idea is awesome, I like it much better than using those leg braces, bubba kept falling over and was always just laying there! the design of the teacup forces legs under and in! but you have to let them out and see how they are improving feed and give them water, again don't over or underheat them.

Funny story! I've heard that very same story from other folks! We got rid of all the wallpaper here. Yay! Definitely stock up whenever you can! Had a very bad run last year.
