I LOVE this method

HOWEVER I strongly believe sending them sideways is an issue!
Why? because if you have ever taken an egg and tried to shake it and dislodge the air cell with brutal force you will find it takes ALOT OF FORCE.
Arm tiring force! HOWEVER the tiny non stop jostling's on the road will work that air cell loose and cause it to roll to the most upper part of the egg.
look at this image to understand what I am explaining. WE ALL KNOW THE IMPORTANTS OF EGGS being FAT END UP for positioning reasons as well!
My two cents lol

I agree! Now, tell the P.O. to keep the box sitting up straight! They toss those boxes around, pay no attention to the fragile. I went to pick up a box one day, and watched the gal toss it around to find where she needed it to scan it! Argh, I was wincing, and going, oh, oh...then one day..my mail man did the same thing..a new mail man, he knows better now, plus, I go get them more often than not!

I always have to assist them in this condition, they pip so odd because they couldn't turn right : (
I only assist after the others started to hatch.

I do the same. :) If I have no pips after, after several have hatched, then I pip the other bad ones like this. I have all of the ones that look to need assisting in another bator, so they can all hang out at the same time.

I didn't start assisting until last night, which was day 24. I'm wondering if I could have saved two if I had tried earlier. :(
live and learn.

And now for the happy news about my classroom hatch. :) They are ON TIME... :) I've got 1 out. It is hopping around like a frog in there.. never seen that before.. lol...

I've also got NINE pips! Every time I check, there's another one pipping. This seems promising. :) Pictures coming, as long as the kids stay out for recess long enough for me to take them and upload them. :)

Lucky. I've tried getting a school close to me to do a hatch. The gal at the desk just said, ok, I'll let them know..as I finished telling her that I would be willing to bring a bator and eggs. I think I will try again. That was last year. Maybe someone else will be in the office to hear.

I entered these in the tiara contest. It said I needed to enter them here as well. This is my Easter Egger "Baby". We don't have any inside pets (aside from two premature baby goats that moved in last week) so my daughters play dress up with the chickens. Baby doesn't seem to mind, she just channels her inner diva.

I use the foam tubing too, but I cut short pieces for 1 or two eggs so they can sit fat end up in a small tight box. Then I put them in a bigger box and always make sure its a flat rectangular shape with the label on the top, so hopefully when it comes to rest it will be sitting the correct way during transit. Who knows, I think it's still a roll of the dice if they make it or not. I have 27 in transit from Iowa to Oregon now. Crossing fingers for that one!

Ok, I have a drs. appt tomorrow afternoon. So, I just went ahead and pretty much am locking down tonight. I won't be turning tomorrow, but may open the bator in the morning to add, or take away a sponge. We'll see how it looks in the morning. I had to toss three..not sure on a few, and am scared to death of some of them. I don't mark the air sacs until I lock down, so I can see how I want to set them.
Here's an example of how so many of them are..some are on both sides..saddles...will be watching them closely. I put the real bad ones in a separate bator, in case I have some start hatching, others don't even pip..then I usually check the others. This picture shows one side way up high on the side, that chick is very much alive!
Half of all my BBS Orps are like this. One is pretty severe on both sides, but the chicks are still wiggling around. Just hoping. Strangely, they are still struggling to lose weight even though the aircells look huge. I think they are probably long and shallow. I can see the chick through the aircell on one. He's not in it, just behind it, or between the two long sides. I'm also very nervous for them. Good luck with your hatch!
