Well, I had to go downstairs to get more labels for the seed trays, so I peeked in the incubator. Everything looked the same, at first. But when I looked closer, an EE egg under the heater/fan had pipped! Just when I thought I'd have to wait until tomorrow for any action, my first egg pipped!!
Here's a pic, so you know it's real.
So far (2 hrs), with the salt test, hydrometer #1 is 67% and hydrometer #2 is 70%; so the one's about 8% low, and other 5% low;
The one (#2) I'd had in the incubator before, was reading 66% when the incubator hydrometer was reading 46%
So, if it's 5% low, it would have been actually 71%; that means the incubator hydrometer is 25% too low!!
Should I wait a few more hours for the salt test, to see what the hydrometers read then?
Or do you think I can quick open up the incubator to put the dig therm/hydrometers back in - since it looks like the humidity is too high anyways (it's still reading 46% = around 70% actually)?
What should I do now that the one egg has pipped? Should I not add the hydrometers and just keep an eye on the water level?
I'm rooting for you & your chicks! So much drama! Argh!Thanks for the support, I just dosed each chick with a little bit of the poly-vi-sol, I'm sure just a touch can't hurt and only help.
The only other silkie pip I have is getting a little bit bigger, I can hear him/her cheeping, so that cheers me up a little. Will update later, Hope everyones lockdowns and hatches are going good!
I'm so sorry.I rushed to get my son and made a trip to a few different stores to get the poly vi sol with out iron and finally found it at walmart...thought for sure when I got back my little white silkie would be gone. Well, I run into the room and my white silkie is up and running around (remember I thought this chick was unable to be helped (although I still got electrolytes in his mouth by putting it on his beak and not even sure if he got any because he was so unresponive)...
Well, I walked in JUST to see my RIR just put up his last fight and stop breathing.![]()

I'm about to dose all the chicks with some poly-vi-sol!!!! or even just add some to there water. ugh I'm a nervous wreck.
Quote: You can quickly open it and stick the hygrometer back in the bator as long as your chick is not zipping. If it is zipping, leave it alone until it hatches.
I have a chick!!! Hatched about 5 minutes ago!!! Yay! I had just about given up hope for this whole hatch... And 2 days early! I'm so happy because it is one of the chicks for my friend. After such disappointing development, she said if she even got one chick she would be happy. She is starting her own little flock of layers and when she heard these chicks would hatch out for Easter, she wanted to give them to her 6 year old son from the Easter Bunny. She's going to set the brooder up in her basement, then lay jelly bean eggs through the house and down the stairs and tell Mason it is Easter Bunny poop and have him follow it and find the chick!!! Too fun!
Ahhh, so that's what the 12 is all about. Sounds like fun and a bunch of lucky children. Good on you both!!Nah, ya just love kids!) I married again, he had 7, I had 4, then we had one together. 12 kids! Love it. They are all out now, so lots of grandchildren. Love it!
