Stubby will be fine - the biggest problem will be defending himself from the others. But since you are building him his own coop he will be good. We had this happen to a full grown rooster quite a few years ago when we had the long weeks of way below 0 temps (-40s). The other roosters hadn't let him into the coop a couple of nights and when we finally figured it out his frostbite had been too bad. He walked on his stubs and got around just fine. He lived on my sister's little hobby farm for 5 years before she had problems with a weasel in their barn and lost him and a bunch of her other chickens. The weasel didn't touch any of the birds that were not red. Good luck with Stubby!
Thanks! That actually gives me some hope for him...
I've been roooting for him from the get go! (please let us know his progress!)
Thanks!! Me too...
So I already entered this in the cute Easter chicks contest, but had to share it here cause it is too precious. This is my niece Sarah. I thought it would be immeasurable fun to let her play with some of the chicks from the hatch on Easter Sunday and take some photos (and cause my sister really wanted some good photos of her). Oh boy, the sheer excitement of it was almost too much. The face she is doing here we in my family call "bird lips" which I though went well with the chicks. You can see her just exploding with excitement. Couldn't hardly get her to sit still and she kept picking them up by their heads - good thing they are a lot sturdier than they look. I have a few others where they climbed up into her lap, but by that point, she was getting tired of sitting still so the facial expressions are not quite as good. Can't ask for more from an 8mo old though.
Too cute!!
What happened!!!!
When I first put Prim and her chicks back into the main coop, they somehow got locked out of the coop overnight and it was really cold. He frostbit both of his feet and they died and fell off. :'(

I hatched 25 out of 50 set, 35 went into lockdown. Not bad for half of them being shipped eggs, and the other half being fathered by a 5 month old roo.

Thanks! That actually gives me some hope for him...

OH NO!!!! I was watching about Prim's babies but must have missed this part. Poor little boy!!!

Well, I lost me assisted hatch today.

She had a bump on her naval that never went down. Quite honestly, I was surprised she made it a week (almost). I noticed this morning that the naval bump made a shelf for poop to stick to. I cleaned her up today (poop only), but it seemed like the bump was worse...like it had been leaking. It was kinda crusty like dried honey. I left it alone & just sprayed it with Vetericyn. I had to run some errands today & she was gone when I got home. I had just decided to call her Button too...as in belly button. Really sux.
I'm so sorry to hear this. It's looking like I'm going to have to put down one or two chicks tonight. The one with the sack just spends its time standing, with its eyes closed, cheeping loudly. It looks like it's in a lot of pain. It's making me sick to see it so uncomfortable, but I don't know what else to do. Maybe our babies just weren't meant to be

I find it harder to put something out of its misery than to kill for any other reason. I think it's because it means I've failed.
