The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

So I already entered this in the cute Easter chicks contest, but had to share it here cause it is too precious. This is my niece Sarah. I thought it would be immeasurable fun to let her play with some of the chicks from the hatch on Easter Sunday and take some photos (and cause my sister really wanted some good photos of her). Oh boy, the sheer excitement of it was almost too much. The face she is doing here we in my family call "bird lips" which I though went well with the chicks. You can see her just exploding with excitement. Couldn't hardly get her to sit still and she kept picking them up by their heads - good thing they are a lot sturdier than they look. I have a few others where they climbed up into her lap, but by that point, she was getting tired of sitting still so the facial expressions are not quite as good. Can't ask for more from an 8mo old though.
I vote for you. Awesome picture

Out of 10 eggs set I only had one hatch :(
But my eggs weren't counted in the original number set so I guess it doesn't matter for the hatch count? Reporting just in case

I am ecstatic! My fav chick (currently nicknamed "baby fluff and puff" who was my late bloomer got the frizzle gene!!!! At one week old, his wing feathers are showing the tell tale turn out. I also think he's gonna be a roo, because he's developed a mini comb at one week, but only time shall tell on that. That's not to say I wouldn't keep him if he were a roo, it's just less likely. So either his daddy is my current frizzled roo (Turuk) or my confused frizzled hen who crows and struts, but lays eggs and has no spurs (whom we just call Frizzle Hen). It's most likely Turuk since the egg he came from was larger than the eggs I suspect from Frizzle Hen because she is my tiniest chicken at just over a pound.

It's too bad I already entered a photo of this guy at one day old in the Easter Chick contest, cause the photo above I think is even cuter. Shows his tiny size and fluff better, as well as his color (that's my hand in the upper photo and I have "little boy" hands). Either way, he is the most adorable thing I have ever seen.

One of the plain yellow chicks from this hatch also got the frizzle gene. Not too shabby. Here's hoping some of the tiny eggs I set last week have it cause there is a really good chance that they came from Frizzle Hen.

Congratulations!

Congrats to you both. Beautiful!!!!!

I loved all the pictures--very hard to pick !!

This is my Stubby's feet (or lack there-of).

I had to move him inside, just because the other chickens were picking on him. He's not really happy about the small cage I have him in, but I'm working on a custom built coop just for him with ramps and deep bedding and shelves with lips on them so I can bed those down as well and he can feel like he can get off the ground. I am planning on picking one small EE to live with him so he won't be lonely...

This is a bad pic of him, cuz I was holding him in my lap and trying to take the picture...
Have you seen these: http://www.etsy.com/listing/106158021/1-neoprene-chicken-shoe?ref=shop_home_active
I wondered if they might be of any use. They'd certainly cushion the bone and may even help give him more balance.

Broody question....

Is it normal that I caught "them" off the nest already? They only hatched a day ago? she was teaching them to eat the chick starter I threw on the floor!

Not a great pic but I got excited! she was only up for a short time and went back to the two remaining eggs and so did the chicks!

Yep, totally normal.

As for the eggs that haven't pipped internally, you could stick them in your bator and see if they hatch late, but I'd generally trust the broodies judgement.

So adorable!
Well, I lost me assisted hatch today.

She had a bump on her naval that never went down. Quite honestly, I was surprised she made it a week (almost). I noticed this morning that the naval bump made a shelf for poop to stick to. I cleaned her up today (poop only), but it seemed like the bump was worse...like it had been leaking. It was kinda crusty like dried honey. I left it alone & just sprayed it with Vetericyn. I had to run some errands today & she was gone when I got home. I had just decided to call her Button too...as in belly button. Really sux.
I'm sorry. Sometimes they are just not strong enough. I've rarely been successful with any chick I help out of the shell, except for ones that have already zipped then got stuck. So I no longer assist chicks. I've had to put chicks down and it's not a fun experience.
