Should I be able to tell if an Amercauna is a pullet or a cockrel by now or would it be too soon since Easter Hatch? They are about 5 weeks old or so now. If I posted pictures would anyone be able to tell me what they are? What would help the most...close up of the comb or tail or just the entire chick?

Ameraucana's can be tricky, but by 5 weeks, you should be able to tell for the most part. Every now and then one fools you. Post pictures and I'll have a look.

You should be able too. I can with my Buckeyes.

Okay guys, you are the experts and I'm excited to know if we can see pullet or cockerel at about 5 weeks old. These are Amercaunas.

Chick#1 "Black Beak": Coloring is Black and White...would this be splash or will he/she molt in as black? Not that it matters, this is the calmest, sweetest chick I have ever seen. Please oh please be a GIRL!

Chick#2 "Miss Lavender": Coloring is Blue. This chick is very friendly. Even my 2 year old can hold him/her and he/she just is happy to sit on his hand. I love the coloring of this chick.

Chick#3 "Daisy": Coloring is White. This is my daughter's favorite chick, but despite numerous attempts to tame him/her, he/she does not like to be picked up much, but will tolerate it. He/She is happy to perch on an arm if he/she chooses to do so, but otherwise she prefers to roam with the blue chick.

#1 & #3 almost definitely pullets. #2 is borderline but guessing pullet there too since comb is still pretty small & light.

Really?!! I'm bouncing off the walls in excitement if they could be all pullets! Hopefully they aren't being sneaky!

So those extremely perky tail feathers on #3 are not relevant?

With this warm spell we've been having, mine have been off of any heat since last Friday. They are just dandy at night even. They snuggle together, but no peeping. We are mid 80's during the day, mid to low 50's at night.

Warm spell? What I wouldn't do for a warm spell about now. We just got 6.5 inches of snow!

It does seem not likely they'd all be pullets, does it

? The white one is the one I was most suspicious of because of his/her behavior, but also physically, he/she is lagging in getting his/her feathers and his/her tail is quite pert...lol...but he/she has absolutely no red above the beak where the comb should be getting red, so it was confusing. He is the one always picking fights too but I guess both boys and girls can do that. Daisy (the white chick) is my daughter's favorite, but I've been slowly suggesting to her that it could be a cockerel and reminding the kids that if any are cockerels, we will give them to the 4H club in the area. She is sort of getting used to the idea now, but I can tell she doesn't really want to give it away at all.

The blue one is the one I really want to be a pullet, so it probably isn't either

. But on the up side, I would be thrilled if the little black one is a pullet because she is such a sweetheart

. Will she molt and be all black most likely? Isn't it amazing how quickly the make their way into your heart? I'm so glad I have a place for boys to go without being eaten!
