The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Ok, I need some shoulders to cry on and maybe some advice as well. My husband bought me a LG incubator from tractor supply and put a computer fan on it to help circulate the air. I have had a real time getting that thing to maintain a regular temp. I had a previous hatch in it but it didn't go all that great. I had finally got the temp maintained but I had to put water in it every day to keep up the humidity. I read on here that the fan should be pointing towards the top or side and I had mine facing down. Duh, that must be my problem right there. My husband flipped it around for me tonight to see if it helped. I watched the hygrometer for a bit and thought everything was fine. I came back probably an hour later and the temp read 108.6! Have I just killed everything in the bator? I'm soooo upset. I would say this is my rookie mistake but I am in fact a rookie. This is my first year using incubators instead of broodies. Stupid stupid stupid. How could I have not seen this coming? I took the top off quickly and moved the eggs into an old incubator I have that works like a charm. The turner was full. It was chicken eggs and goose eggs. I am scared to candle them to see the damage I have done. This is a big chunk of my Easter hatching eggs. Sorry this post is so long but I am so sad. Has this happened to anyone else? I am about ready to throw that stupid incubator in the trash.

Very cool! Thank you! I will have to show this to the hubby when he gets home from work. This looks like a great idea. I feel like it is my fault for buying one of those cheap crappy incubators. I bought a cheap incubator and put about $250 worth of hatching eggs in it.... DOH! Lmbo. Some people like to learn the hard way. That would be me. I candled 4 of the eggs a little bit ago just because I was so worried and those 4 are definitely still kicking. The old Hovabator I put them in may be old but it's a beast. The thing keeps temp and humidity like clockwork. That's what I get for trying to "up grade".

MANY MANY people do that.

While i feel this "fix" makes the perfect bator, people consistantly toss money away on eggs instead 1. getting a stable bator and 2. learning their incubator and environment before indulging in those 5 buck an egg auctions

Thos HAL puts a lot of people together to share info and experiences

Yeah, that's me. I had good hatches in the old hovabator but with this new incubator, I had it setup and temp and humidity were good but when I added eggs, it went all wonky. I have about 12 broodies in the henhouse but given my bad track record and their bad judgments,I figured an incubator would be the best way to go. Now, I'm not so sure.

Down to about 40 of 92 HAL eggs. There were quite a few old eggs, but I might try lowering my hen to rooster ratio by making one more pen and seeing if it helps.

Worried about the pre-HAL birthday egg hatch - 4 Bresse and 1 Blue Copper Maran out of 3 dozen total (18 still in lockdown), hatch date was yesterday. No external pips for a long time and it is pretty quiet - only one internal pip responding. No Basques yet. Temperature/humidity log read fine for the whole period. Shipped eggs are much more nerve wracking.

Lost the limp chick overnight despite helping it drink an electrolyte/probiotic water with a bit of sugar added. :(
