It just occurred to me, while fantasizing about hatching eggs, that even though I have this new incubator and all the goodies, I still am praying, deep down, for a hen to go broody. I would love to time this hatch-a-long with a broody. However, I believe it's been said before, you can't ever seem to get a broody hen when you want one.

Does anybody ever manage to participate in the Easter Hatch-a-Long with a broody hen? Sounds like fun to me!!

There usually are some with Broody hatches going on.

I have tried to get some released but Kim wants to make sure thee chickens are close to Show Quality first.

I think she has some of the Best in the US now. That picture was from 2006. They are even better now with 8 years of Breeding.

Maybe next year though since the breeding program has been stepped up a bit.

Well you just let me know when, cuz I want some!!! Lol.

I'm pretty worried- before leaving for work this morning I noticed one of my hens seemed to have some blood running down from her vent area.
She wouldn't come down from the roost so I couldn't get a very good look at it.
I was able to research it a bit during my lunchbreak and it sounds like it might be a prolapsed uterus/vent. I've read some of the threads from pervious people who have had this happen. I sure hope I can get to her soon today before the other hens notice it.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I woke up this morning to 4-6 inches of snow and more coming down fast!!! After the past two 50 degree days with all the paths melted and lots of nice bare ground and grass showing, this is quite a depressing blow.

Out shoveling paths to the coops for over an hour this morning. Now, I like shoveling, and making neat wide paths in the snow, but I think we have had enough practice in perfect-path-making already this winter!!!

A looong time ago... And to top it off, we are forecast to have NEGATIVE temperatures AGAIN tonight!!! I don't think any of my hens will want to go broody in those temps!!

On the egg prices - we sell our eggs for $4 per dozen this year. We started at $3 several years ago, and slowly went up, mainly due to rising grain costs. We make our own Soy-Free, Organic feed, and we have many customers from a local health group that really wants the Soy-free eggs. I have seen other Organic local eggs going for close to $5 per dozen around here in Lapeer, Michigan, and I know Free Range, Organic eggs in the stores are close to $4 per dozen as well.

Just don't send snow here. I'm also dreading the temperature drop.

I came home from work yesterday to find a notice taped to my door. It informed that on Friday, March 14th, from 9:00am to 6:00pm, we will experience an interuption in our power.

NOBODY ASKED ME!! I have a hatch due that day and about 150 eggs in the bator! Off to borrow a generator........
I hope you can get the generator. We have a natural gas whole has generator, so unless the electric and gas companies conspire against us we are set.

Me TOO!!!!

@chicken picken... When the snow was too deep here I used a sled to move the fresh shavings and such into the coops and the nasty stuff to the garden. (thank you for yet another awesome tip, Sally Sunshine).

Since we're posting the goat pics... here are some of my babies:

The above pic is of our "Houdini" we simply could NOT keep her put...till we got the No climb fence, NOT one escape since....Woo Hoo!!! @SilkieSensation (I know, I know, there is no such thing as a 'goat proof fence'), but this is working for me, for now. YAY!!

Those are really cute.

Good morning all! Having my coffee and waking up. Cannot believe how bipolar the weather is this year. 80 degrees yesterday and down to 52 now, will be a lot cooler and stormy very shortly.

It's interesting with people from all over talking about the weather. We're thinking yesterday we were all the way into the 50's and now we're supposed to drop to single digits.

Yes, there usually are some people fortunate enough to use broodies.

I will put you on my list!

Ok, you are on my list of People that Want Chickens!

That must be a long list!

I believe her avatar is of Robins eggs.

I think she was saying people ask her if they are Easter Egger eggs.

Wouldn't it be nice if chickens had that ability to lay us that brilliant blue color.
they might!

Araucana based blue egg layers have blue egg shell genes on a different place than cream legbar based blue egg layers. Crossing them up would make a double blue egg shell gene that may change the blue. It would be cool if it made the blue a darker color.....

SO are you saying I should get some araucana now to put in with my Legbars!? lol

Ill be sure to tell DH it wasn't my idea it was Rons and we needed to test this theory.

You guys are still up right? No one has said Good Night yet so I am still here!

I am keeping two of the chicks I hatched to keep a Cross beaked Delaware company. They are getting along very well. The Del is a weak older than the other two:

I kept one of the Splash UofA blues. This one is quite Spunky:

I have one of the UofA Blues X Crele Penedesencas too. The chicks has a white spot on it's head:

It is quite a poser too:

Crossing my fingers that I get fertile eggs in time. I have a TON of eggs already, and it's only Tuesday( I know it's Wednesday, but they haven't laid yet. Obviously...). Egg production was already pretty high over winter and now it has gone up even more. The rooster gave me a couple fertile eggs earlier in winter. Now that it's warming up I hope everyone has chicks on their minds. He was flirting a lot yesterday. Don't know if the hens were impressed or not. I think I'll go ahead and color a couple chicks if I get enough fertile ones in time for Easter.
