The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

niclandia says they were a different breed from south America. The combs are different which puts the blue egg shell gene at a different spot.

The breed used is hidden in the original cross notes. They were trying to keep a secret about how they were made I think.

Anyway, you can get two different types of blue egg shell genes from the cross. One associated with a pea comb and one that is not. They would be double blue too so making stable OEs from them would be easier.

the originals were a Chilean hen. the male died on the ship voyage back to the uk. They used the leghorn and other breeds to reproduce how the male looked then breed him to the chilean hens.

Oh my goodness, talk about past memories! We had a dog that looked like this when I was a teen. We loved him soo much. Hercules. He thought he was all that. I have a mentally handicapped sister that would walk just right down the block to go get penny candy and a pop..yep..penny candy..and this dog would go with her every time. He would not let one soul walk on that sidewalk while she was on her way or back. Waited for her at the door, then walked back with her, again, no one could come near her. If any of the rest of us walked down to the store and he was with us, he didn't pay any attention to anyone that walked by us. Smart dog. I still have a lock of his hair from his ear. He was a spaniel mix.

I can't read over a hundred posts. I'm sorry.

Hurley is in!; thowe is in too!; acemario asked to join!; Desiree Brown has signed up!; tommysgirl joined us!; turtlefat did too!; HayDuke27 is hatching too!

jbenson has homemade rainbow layers! A mix of big and small breeds that lay different colors of eggs. Penny Hen gave advice on getting Sexlinked Black Barred OEs! (olive egg laying hens). Later, we learned that DH is an enabler—Loth of eggs will be hatched this year!
I want a bunch of different colors of eggs too!!! I need some blue layers.
I need your DH to talk to mine; he tries not to get involved, except to promote common sense. I try to tell him that I have chicken sense, but he insists, so I listen.

I searched "Spitz" and this is what came up:

I added "chicken" and those are rather decorative looking chickens. =)
And stripey yellow chickens would be a beautiful addition to any flock!!!

Arcountrychick is a hatching machine—one that will not stop until hubby notices!

My DH is rather inobservent; as long as I don't say anything, I don't think he would realize the continually growing number of chickens.

Michaelf wished us a good morning and is building new pens! Chicken pickin worked the late shift and is tired; abmaddox1981 has gorgeous Georgia weather this morning.

I'm going to have to build new pens soon. Can I see yours?

Uphilljill posted a picture of a kid sitting next to a chicken. Many think it is a little girl, but they dressed boys up like that in the good old days!

So excited have rhodebar eggs coming and found a good resource for some hatching eggs for the Easter Hatch Along.

I have three RB pullets out there. Two from one hatch, and only kept one from another. I hope they are as good a layer as they say. I thought it might be nice having something similar to the RIR, but with some barrs going on for different. They are turning out pretty nice.

The generator is reserved, to be picked up tomorrow. Whew!

Thanks for all the luck, it worked!

Now if I can jus keep it running all day and it will be enough to run the cabinet and tabletop bators............

I'm sorry, I have to say it...forget the refrigerator!
gig.gif
I know, I know, I would be doing the same thing. That fridge can stay cool for a while. Just a thought.

My last cochin i had was named Chicky Minaj!

What does Minaj mean?

Wow gorgeous!

Thank you! =)

This will be my first hatch ever this year, and I'm doing it with the Easter Hatch-a-Long. I'm very excited, I've got my brooder and am getting everything set up and tested. I have been burying myself in reading, and think I am going to stand a good chance of hatching some eggs. I am using a Styrofoam incubator with egg turner and forced air fan. I'm double and triple checking my heat and humidity with several different measuring devices. I'm getting after it!!

I am hatching chickens from my flock, which is a year old. The rooster is a Welsummer, and I have a whole variety of hens (you can see them in my signature line). I'm most excited to get some offspring from my Light Brahmas. I've read that I will get a Buff Columbian with that cross, and that seems pretty cool to me.

Anyway, awesome to do a hatch-a-long, I'm very excited and counting the days until I will set my eggs!!!

Here are some pictures of my dude and some of the Brahmas I hope to get eggs from:

Woohoo!!

BTW, I really like your avatar!!! =D

OvaView High Intensity egg candler

$44.99 + shipping

So about 25 dozen eggs should cover it. That will only be 5 weeks worth of eggs, but then again I need another 3 dozen for the Easter hatch-a-long.

I think I should look for a paper route too.

What does everyone else sell their extra eggs for? Around here the stores have them for about $3.00/dz.

Hi, I am thinking of purchasing 2 yr old Buff Orphington Hens. Need opinions as to if you think they would be traumatized to the point they wont continue laying eggs. I really didn't want to buy baby chicks and wait for eggs. Opinions please>

Thanks,

Dolly

First off..

Ok, my opinion of a 2 yr. old BO. Getting older. Will start to slow down on egg production within the year. Probably. Will go broody. Probably. If that's what you want..a broody hen, chances are, you will have one. They are very sweet birds. I have a pullet out there that will come up to me while all of the rest run off like I'm going to chop their heads off. The pullets that is, my older chickens love me. :)
