Say what??? I haven't been that luck yet! Congrats!Right place right time...DH went to the Sandlapper Poultry Show in Barnwell, SC. The Cream Leg Bar association had a raffle for fertile eggs. He did not win them, but he mentioned to the woman manning the both that he thought they were really pretty chickens. She in turn asked if he would like two because someone who was to buy them did not show up. He asked how much she wanted and she said he could have them for free. So off he went to find a box to take them home. They are both pullets and nearing laying age.![]()
Awww...I lost my splash cochin roo that was about a year old last week. And the hens eggs aren't fertile. @Sally Sunshine want to sell me some cochin eggs?![]()
Oh yeah, that's a boy! And that other one is a huge girl!! I do have a pullet..pretty sure it's a pullet, LF cochin out there. Interesting coloring. I've been trying to get a splash anything..can't seem to happen for me. These two are beautiful.
Converted the barn and built 3 more coops! I don't tare count for fear my husband might overhear a number. Its amazing how many chickens my neighbor has the nerve to let wander on our property, sleep in our coops and eat our food! What are we goldilocks and the 300 plus chickens? How do you best answer the "how many chickens do you have now?" question?I have been avoiding exact numbers with "not enough" and "look, over there!"![]()
Anyone turn an entire barn into a coop? I may need to do that the way chicken math is headed!![]()
Turkey "chicks" are called Poults.
208 participants currently.
Woot woot...we passed last years numbers right?
I believe my neighbor is using my incubator too....Hey everybody!Anyone have eggs in the incubator already?![]()

LOL I have muscovy eggs set for easter and over 300 chicken and quail eggs looks like I will be firing up the extra cabinet incubator.
An extra cabinet? I just have an extra brinsea and lg...hmmm
new incubator is looking good! Have you candled yet?
If you set eggs every week it takes the sting out of the waiting game lolIt is taking all my willpower to wait a couple more days to candle again, but I told myself this hatch I would candle on 7, 14 and 18 only. Trying not to handle them too much or have them out of the 'bator too much and since I'm turning by hand, I thought they probably have more than enough exposure to the cool air of the room the 'bator is in. Please Wednesday, come quickly, I want to see how they are progressing!![]()
1...but who wants to set just 1?Is there a minimum amount of eggs that I have to set ?
I like the hubby's answer. I agree with someone else who said you can collect for 15 days. With homegrown eggs, I can store for 12 - 14 days and not have it effect hatching rates. But whole different story with shipped eggsSo I am skipping over my orpingtons and rocks and all my pure bred lovelies so I can take a whack at hatching my RSLs new eggs.
I have been getting 2 eggs a day on average.
I asked my husband how many eggs I should collect each day for setting for the hatch a long.
He said "all of them from now until then."
Perhaps he doesn't understand how this works. I have around 150 chicks coming on Friday. We do not live on a farm. I don't think I want to set that many.
How many should I set and when should I collect? Any opinions appreciated. I'm terrible at estimating these things. I always end up hatching wayyy too many and while I love babies, I hate having to feed everyone![]()
Gotta love any species that the male does the preganancy and birth lolpapa emus are the ultimate stay at home dads
The male emu takes full responsibility for the incubation of the eggs and the rearing of chicks. Males
establish territories and build the nests. Once the eggs are laid in the nest, only the male incubates
the eggs. During the eight weeks it takes for the eggs to hatch, the male doesn’t eat, drink or
defecate. He survives on his accumulated body fat and may lose up to a third of his body weight
during this time. Once the eggs hatch, the male protects the growing chicks for five to seven
months as they mature.
Oz....are emu's ever on your import list?
I'm beginning to think that my guess in the number of eggs contest for this hatch along might have been too small. This hatch along is a big deal!![]()
